ROTORUA.

October 26. A Maori Mission. Quite a number of people were invited by Miss Griffin to the opening of the new Maori Mission house at Whakarewarewa on Monday, the 18th. Miss Griftin (who has come out to New Zealand a second time for the purpose) and Miss Grant hope to do a great work amongst the Maoris at Whakarewarewa, the children especially taking to the instruction imparted by those two zealous lady missionaries, of whom they are very fond. Native children are affectionate little souls, and are easily interested. After a short dedication service by Archdeacon Williams, assisted by the Rev. C. A. Tisda.ll, addresses were given by the Rev. Tisdail and Archdeacon Williams, and by Meta Taupopoki and Wheroro. The absence of the Rev. F. A. Bennett on this occasion was regretted by ail, but he is away on a visit to the Islands after the severe shock of his wife’s death. A delicious afternoon tea was served to the guests later by Misses Griffin and Grant, assisted by several bright young Maori girls. Amongst the guests I noticed: Mesdames Empson, Tisdail, Malfroy, Kenny (Auckland) , Rhodes, Scott, Penney, Robertson, Gardner, Melville, Pasley, Maxwell, Birks, Hill, Steele, Lyons, Wrigley, Misses Burgoyne, Malfroy, Penney, Seideberg (Napier), Butt. An At Home.

Mrs. L. Birks gave an “at home” on Tuesday, the 19th, and invited a number of people to meet Archdeacon and Mrs: Williams. She received in an Empird gown of electric-blue chiffon taffeta, and was -assisted by Nurse Seideberg (of Napier), who wore a white silk blouse) threaded with blue, and a blue lustra skirt. Amongst those present beside the guest of the afternoon, Mrs. Williams, I noticed: Mesdames Malfroy, Empson, Carr, Wilson (Wellington), Kenny (Auckland), Lundon, Hammond, Menzies, Whitcombe (Christchurch), Tisdail, Braithwaite, Cragg, Crowhurst, Missea S. Empson, Corlett, Malfroy, Freer, Lundon. A delicious afternoon tea was handed round, and during the afternoon. Mrs. Cragg played, and songs were given by Misses Malfroy, Corlett, and S. Empson. The Winter Dances. The last of our series of jolly littlq winter dances was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday, the 21st, and, in spite of the rain, everyone turned up, and the dance, as usual, was quite a success. The committee—Mrs. Maxwell, Misses Donne, C. Smith, Pownall, and Hawkesworth—is to be congratulated upon the way in which they have managed these little affairs, which provided a long-felt want amongst the young people. A delicious supper was arranged upon thq stage, which has done duty as a supperroom, and the music was provided by Mr. Bartlett, extras being contributed by Misses Smith and Pounall. Amongst those present were Mesdames Maxwell, Kenny, Malfroy, Misses Pounall, Smith, Donne, Hawkesworth, Ireland, 8. Emp-

son, Symes (Gisborne), Wylie, Sisley, Lyon, Malfroy, Messrs. Hawkins, G. Empson, W. Purcell, Maingay (Te Arolia), Martin, Wright (Auckland), Hawley, Browning (Auckland), Wylie, Muneon, Melville, Dr. Bertram. The Bowling Season.

1 he opening of the bowling green on Saturday last was rather marred by the wet weather. A number of bowlers, however, turned up, and the jack was thrown in by Mrs. Urquhart, wife of the president of the club, and the green was declared open in a short speech by the president. All the members present were entertained -at afternoon tea at the Kiosk by the president. Owing to the sodden condition of the green through heavy rain, play was not allowed, but bow-lers are looking forward to a good seaeon on splendid greens. Personal.

Archdeacon and Mre. Herbert Williams have been visiting Rotorua. Dr. and Mrs. Coates, and Mrs. Leslie Mair (of Auckland), are visiting Rotorua.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Gri inert one (8.N.Z., Waitara) are staying in Rotorua just now.

Mr. W. E. Dive and Miss Dive have just returned to Auckland, after visiting Rotorua.

Mrs. Blow has returned to Rotorua after a holiday spent in Wellington. Miss Esa Empson, of Rotorua, is visiting friends at Tauranga.
