NAPIER.

October - 29. A Momentous Question. From a social point of view, dullness does not describe our state during the week. At the end of last week the Hugh Ward Comedy Company were with us, and Miss Grace Palotta displayed some of her charming gowns, and on Saturday next Mr. Foster Fraser will lecture here. We have been trying to pose this week as the most saintly town in the Dominion, and have been looking aghast at a proposal to introduce the dispensing of a sinful cup of tea at our new Municipal Baths on Sunday. Petition and counter-petition have been the order of the day, but “the cup that cheers” has won the fight, and except during church hours thirsty bathers and frequenters of the sea-shore may indulge in this particular form of vice. A good deal of acrimonious controversy was introduced into the discussion, and quite unnecessarily Sunday golf players and their penchant for morning tea and luncheon and afternoon tea were referred to.

Church Missionary Association. The annual Sale of Work in connection with the Church Missionary Association was held in St. John’s Schoolroom on Friday afternoon last, when a large gathering of ladies was present, and the work was soon all sold. Miss E. Thornton (the bon. secretary) was responsible for a great deal of the success of the bazaar. The weather was rather unsettled and threatening, and most of the ladies present wore smart tailor-mades. I noticed: Mrs. Dudley Hill, Mrs. Tanner, Misses Hunter, Mrs. Craig Laing, Mrs. Hector Smith, Mrs. Cornford, Mrs. Margoliouth and her daughters, Mrs. Mayne, Mrs. Hamlin, Mrs. Rutherford, Miss Keith (Pukehou) , Mrs. Edgar. Mrs. T. C. Moore, Mrs. Wm. Nelson, Mrs. J. Williams and Misses Williams (Havelock), Mrs. Allen Gardiner, Miss Braithwaite, Mrs. Crowley, Archdeacon and Mrs. Ruddoek. A Horticultural Revival. Recent inquiries have led to the resuscitation of a horticultural society in Napier. Two meetings have been held, and at the preliminary gathering a very great many ladies were present, which augurs well for its popularity. A strong working committee is to be formed; some of

the chief movers are the Rev. Canon Tuke. Rev. Canon Mayne, Mr. Murdoch, Mr. R. D. D. McLean, and Mr. Brabant. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald King (Tonioana), who went Home recently for a trip on account of Mr. King’s health, have returned very much benefited in health. Mrs. Miles, and Miss Miles, of Wellington, who have been visiting friends in Napier, returned to their home on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Williamson, of Gisborne, were in town last week, and motored through from here to Gisborne. Mr. Justice Sim and Mrs. Sim arrived here on Saturday evening by the express.
