NAPIER.

October 16. Napier Park Races. Weather conditions were ideal for the two days of the Napier Park meeting. A summer sun was shining brilliantly, but the atmosphere was tempered by a cool breeze from the sea. and it was very pleasant on the course. The Park was looking at its best, which is saying a great deal, for it is one of the most picturesquely situated courses in the, North Island. The enjoyment of the meeting was to an extent marred by the sad fatal accident to a jockey on the first day. On Wednesday (Labour Day) , which was a public holiday, a very large number of ladies journeyed to the Park, and many beautiful spring toilettes were displayed on the lawn. I saw Lady Price looking very handsome in a Princess gown of creme cloth, and large hat trimmed with roses; Mrs J. H. Coleman wore a black and white gown, and smart hat ; Mrs Musker (England), looked very smart ami graceful in an amethyst cloth gown with Directoire coat, and white facings and buttons, very large black hat with black feathers; Mrs T. 11. Lowry, handsome gown of striped black and white linen, large black liat; Mrs Stedman, becoming black chiffon taffeta, and black hat; Mrs 11. Russell, saxe blue cloth Princess gown, and large black hat with feathers: Mrs J. McVay, gown of navy blue chiffon taffeta, and smart little bonnet with roses; Mrs Swan, olive green shadow lustre coat and skirt, smart black hat; Miss G. Cotterill looked very nice in a white gown, with lace Diretoire coat, and becoming green hat; Mrs (Dr.) Bernau, gown of black and white striped material, pretty beehive hat with pink; Mrs Miles (Wellington), coat and skirt of amethyst linen, large black hat: Mrs Rainey, grey tailormade gown, smart black hat; Mrs J. Ormond, pale pink frock, with hat to match; Miss Ormond was in creme, with large black hat; Mrs Logan, handsome black silk gown and black hat. High School Sports. The Napier High School annual sports were held at the Recreation Ground on Friday afternoon. A large number of the parents and friends of the boys were present, and members of the Board of Governors. Mrs. (Dr.) Moore, wife of the Chairman of the Board of Governors presented the prizes at the conclusion of the sports. In the early part of the afternoon the weather looked somewhat threatening, and many of the ladies present were in tailor-mades. However, the sun came out brightly, and the ground presented quite a gay and animated scene. Mrs. (Dr.) Moore wore a handsome electric blue Empire gown, with lace yoke, and hat with pink roses; Mrs. (Dr.) Edgar, striking costume of blue and white striped material, trimmed with blue embroidery, large black hat; Mrs. McLernon, stylish black and white striped linen, burnt straw hat with pink roses; Mrs. Stedman, very handsome. black silk gown, trimmed with black velvet in key pattern, white feather boa, and large black hat with feathers; Mrs. Harslon, pretty creme striped voile relieved with moss green, becoming hat with blue flowers; Mrs. Hannah, stylish blue coat and skirt, becoming nattier blue hat; Mrs. Morris, pale green linen costume, lace blouse, smart floral hat; Mrs. Polson, dark green costume, hat with rose; Mrs. Dodd looked nice in black m’ournirfg costume; Mrs. McCarthy, handsome striped costume, becoming toque; •’ Mrs. Da wry, all black gown; Mrs. Balfour, black gown, and becoming purple hat with foliage; Miss. Moeller, navy .-blue skirt, dainty white 'blouse, and pale blue hat; Miss Whitely, long navy blue cloth coat, sailor hat; Miss Lawry, neat creme serge costume, becoming hat. Signs of Progress. Our Municipal Baths are now finished and we are beginning to feel that Napier is just about complete, and fully entitled to be termed a sea-side health resort. Surf-bathing has always been one of the attractions of the summer months, but the more timid bathers ■will now be catered for in the splendid new concrete baths. There is to be a grand opening ceremony to-morrow '(Saturday) afternoon, with the Mayor '(Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P.) and the other City Fathers in attendance, and in the evening a gymkhana, with a very long sports programme, is to be held. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Swainson, of Pahiatua, are in Napier on a holiday. Mrs. Davis Canning, of Oakbourne, is in town for a short holiday. Mr. and Mr-. Musker, of England, who are,touring the colony, are .staying at the Masonic Hotel. Mrs. Glendining, of Wairoa, is on a ▼isit to Napier. Mrs. Holdsworth and her daughter, #f Havelock North, who have been

spending a long holiday here, returned home last week. Mrs. Newbeggin has gone for a holiday to Wellington.
