MARLBOROUGH.

Dear Bee, May 11. It is with, the greatest regret th.it 1 have to mention the death of Airs Alowat, sen., which took place on Friday last at the. residence of her son, Air .1. Mowat. The whole community are deeply concerned at her death, she was so generally beloved, so hospitable, and so kind so well-know n also all over I be colony that many more than Marlborough ami Nelson people will grieve at her death. The funeral took plate at "Altimarioek.” the family estate. The latest social sensiit’on is the teachers' appeal case, held in the Courthouse before Air T. Scott-Smith, Stipendiary Magistrate, Dr McArthur. of Wellington, and Air J. Raynor. The Courthouse has been crowded every day. and an unusual amount of interest taken in the case,

which was decided in favour of the teachers. Thus Mr Stnrroek, the teacher in dispute, wins his case, and the Board have no power io dismiss him. The Marlborough Horticultural Society held their CHRYSA XTH EAIVM SHI HV on Wedne-day last, and it was voted by al] to be the best show held in Blenheim for many years, though a good deal of the success was due to Victim' exhibitors, who competed in every class, and carried off the bulk of the prizes. Airs Allen and Airs Riddell, Pieion, were the only exhibitors of pot plants. Airs Allen again getting first for the best trained plant, a handsome white specimen in full bloom, and first for three incurved plants. Airs Riddell getting first for three

Japanese. A new grower sprung a surprise upon flic old ones, and carried "fl a fair amount of the prizes, though Mrs Riddell and Aliss Dart were well ahead. Airs Allen, Picton, and Airs Vickers judged the bouquets and flora] designs, in the designs Aliss Dart, Picton. took first with a floral model of a I nion Co.’s steamer which was capitally carried out. and Airs Riddell carried off a good many first prizes among the bouquets, winning first for bridal suite, first for shower bouquet, first for bridal: Aliss Furniss also was very fortunate, in gaining first prizes, and several new exhibitors gained wins. The tables were quite a feature of the show, and the judges had io

consider the merits of several—the centres often losing where the flowers gained. T'ltimately, the awards fell to two sisters—Aliases F. Nosworthy first, and 1.. Nosworthy second. Mrs C. Powell's jwblc ran them very close indeed, the -centre lost it. Vegetables and fruit excelled. and potatoes as specimens of local growth wore a splendid advertisement for the country. Alasdames Griffiths. Alacalister. Teniperley and others dispensed afternoon tea on the stage. Among those present T noticed Ales lames Furniss, Bethwaite (Nelson), IV. Adams. R. Scott, A. Fanner, Howard. Rogers, Greensfield. ete., etc. A good many people visited the show during the afternoon. and a crowd in the evening attracted by the music, ete. Pieton people

were disappointed that there was no late, train for the occasion. Pieton is still suffering from an overdose of herrings. The perfume is increasing rapidly, and now people do not minee matters but call it an unmitigated . Strange to relate people can still feel interested in fishing, and more they cat the fish, when every atom of the atmosphere. is simply fish, in all stages of decomposition. It is impossible to get rid of the nuisance, for every tide lands a fresh supply on every beach all up the Sound. Airs Stow gave her usual Thursday evening "At Home” last week. The affair was most enjoyable, 'pirgpong, cards and music making up a pieasant time. Those present were —Air and Mrs Stow, Air and Airs Riddell, Air and Airs Lecocq. Alisses Millington, Greensill (2), Philpotts (2), J. Seymour and AllBridge. In all probability the coaches which now run from Nelson to Blenheim wilt shortly change their route and come to Picton instead, thus avoiding the rivers, which are frecftiently in flood. If the Government grant the money to finish the Plcton-Gore Road the change will soon take place. The scenery round the track from Havelock to Pieton will charm all the tourists who travel by that route, and the coach would arrive in time to eateh the evening trains.
