WANGANUI.

Dear Bee, — August 18. The Hunt Club ball took place on Friday last, and was a very great success. The ladies were responsible for the catering, which was excellent. About 150 couples graced the floor, and daneing was kept going until 3 a.m.

Saturday, August 4th, the last “meet” of the season eventuated. The morn dawned fair, with a cold, bracing wind. At an early hour the town was quite busy, all anxious to start for the “meet.*’ The huntsman and hounds left the Rutland stables at twelve noon, followed by a large number of riders, all eager for the fray. At 1.30 the “throw-off” took place on Mr. Sutherland's property, out on No. 1 line. Work commenced in real earnest, and a capital afternoon's sport ensued, the country being all that could be desired. Afternoon tea was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland, and, needless to say, was greatly enjoyed by the large number present.

Among “the straight goers” was Miss Wilson on Perseverance, a plucky rider, schooling her horse over the jumps in grand style; Miss Douglas (Hawera). on her old friend, Traveller, nnd Miss Maud Brewer mounted on Firefly, looked and jumped well. Mr. Jlastie, on Nimo. and Mr. Hastle (ji>nr.) on Jack Tar; Mr. White on Full Cry: and Mr. Mitchell on Sinbad, all jumped splendidly: Messrs. Selby Morton on Neck or Nothing, J. McNeil on Trafalgar, Grace on lodoform, Farmer on Vanguard, A. Biggie on Venice, Irvine on Berber, Wilson on Gridiron, Brownlie on Prospector, Strachn on Dumbell, Harrison on Queer Fish, McLeod on Harkarau, Low on Ruth tlreville on Try Again. Among others we noticed Mesdatnes Lundins on Prudence, Nixon on Victress, Collins on Lorna, Lind on Djin-Djin, Jones on Fairlight; Misses Dunean (2), Nixon, Ritchie, Cowper, Harrison, Alexander and Biggie. There were many others on horseback and wheels.

The point to point steeplechase takes place next Saturday, but T shall write more about that next week,

ROSE.
