PICTON

Dear Bee, July 5. Since the heavy downpour of ten days ago the weather has been perfect —for winter, of course—very sharp frosts and gloriously fine sunny days; and no one hereabouts seems to be any the worse for the drenching rain, landslips, and gale of wind which astonished our weak nerves less than a fortnight ago. Outside of Blenheim. on the road from Tyntesfield, travellers have to drive carefully through quite a mile—in one place—of water rushing like a torrent on the road. THE WAITOHI DEBATING SOCIETY met in the Institute on Friday evening. As so many new members have joined the Society have now to use the large room, which is a great boon to everybody. The public are also admitted. though only members can take part in the debates. Some very interesting original papers were read and debated, and some really smart and witty remarks were made in regard to some of the papers, which were full of original ideas. Those read were: “Shall Picton Become a Naval Station?* Mi- W. Perano; ‘What is Coal?’ Mr Robertshaw; ‘Music,’ Mr Ashley; ‘Shall Bachelors be Taxed?’ Mr Wilson; ‘Rats.’ Mr Taylor; ‘Modern Authors,’ Mr W. Esson; ‘Ought the Railway Management be Moved to Blenheim?’ Mr K. Jeffries; ‘lnfluence of Music,’ Miss R. Williams; ‘A Cats* Concert,’ Mr H. Greensill; ‘On Football,’ Mr Buick. Other papers and some readings from modern authors are on the tapis for next meeting. A Junior CUP FOOTBALL MATCH between the Grove Town (Albions) and Waitohi was played in Picton on Saturday and resulted in still another victory for the Picton boys, whose splendid ‘passing’ evoked cheers from the spectators and much complimentary comments from the referee, Mr H. Robinson, of Tua Marina. He also gave it as his opinion that two of the Picton team should be placed among the Marlborough ‘reps.’ If the Albions win the next match they will be on a level with the Waitohis for the Cup.

JEAN.

Note.—Our Blenheim letter is unavoid ably crowded out.
