NAPIER.

Dear Bee, July 16 Napier people have listened with pleasure to the admirable lectures of the Rev. Mr Haweis. who has for three nights been at the Theatre Royal. His eloquence was a rare treat. I noticed amongst his listeners. Mesdames Coleman. Wil locks, Margoliouth, Wood. V. Brown, De Lisle. Moore. Misses Matthews. Wallace and High School boarders. Misses White, Bowen. Browning. Hughes, Mrs Balfour. Mrs McVay. Mrs Fraser, Mr and Mrs McLean, Mesdames Von Dadelzen, Dixon, etc. An enjoyable ORGAN RECITAL was given at Trinity Wesleyan Churoh on Friday, and Mrs Prime officiated most capably at the instrument besides singing a solo and in a duet with Mr Prime. The choruses were rendered with great power. THE HAWKE’S BAY CLUB entertained the Captain and officers of H.M.S. Ringarooma at supper on Saturday night. and a pleasant evening was spent. Monday afternoon an ‘ At Home ’ was held on board the warship, and the time passed all too quickly. Afternoon tea and light refreshments were served to all. Mesdames Wenley, Kettle, Morris, Williams (Frimley), McLean, Milne, Thomson. Jarvis. Misses Macfarlane. Balfour, Dymock, Cotterill, Rhodes, McGowan, Williams. Kennedy, Wenley, Watt, etc., were amongst the party. The Christy Minstrel performance of the ‘ringaroo boys’ passed off most successfully, and a substantial sum of money was handed to the hospital authorities. The Gaiety Theatre was crowded on the occasion. A pleasant evening was spent by the NAPIER ROWING CLUB members on Wednesday in honour of the Captain, Mr Frank L. Hutchinson, who is leaving Napier to pursue his artist’s career in the Old Country. Mr R. B. Smith presided, and songs were contributed by Messrs Jago, K. Bell, Davidson. Dixon, Jourdain, Kiely, etc., and recitations were rendered by Messrs Mac Kay, Hartman, and Harrop. The Petane settlers issued invitations for A DANCE to take place in the Eskdale Hall on Friday, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The ladies on the committee had worked well, and itj must have been gratifying to them to see everyone enjoying themselves so heartily. A special conveyance took the town contingent of dancers. Mesdames W. H. Smith (Hedgeley), Cooper, Twigg. Marshall, Clark, Margoliouth, Lady Campbell, Misses Balfour (two), Twigg (two), Hughes, Margoliouth. Watkins, Wilson, Binney (Auckland). Messrs Hartman, Smith. Kells, Hall, Twigg, Cooper, Marshall, Maginnity, Barron, Hughes, Seymour. HITHER AND THITHER. Miss Cornford is visiting Auckland. Miss Hilda Fulton, daughter of General Fulton, of Christchurch, is the guest of Miss Baker. Mr Felix St. Hill has gone to Sydney for six weeks. Mr Barron, from Wellington, is visiting Napier. Miss Browning, formerly of the Girls’ High School, but now of Dunedin, has arrived in Napier, and is staying with the Misses Hughes. Mrs L. B. Brown has returned from England. Mrs Grim wood and Miss Bogle (Petane) ha ve gone to Australia for a few months. STREET DRESSES. Miss E. Miller, grey tweed, white sailor hat; Mrs Hannah, pretty gown of brown cashmere with shot silk trimmings; Mrs Fenwicke, tweed skirt, black silk blouse with bishop’s sleeves, black hat; Miss Marden, brown with Gobelin blue vest; Miss Williams, navy costume; Mrs Craig, tweed gown with triple cape edged with beaver; Miss Martin, stylish heliotrope cashmere, black velvet hat with heliotrope ribbon ; Miss Crerar, navy serge with old gold vest; Mrs Fraser, black silk ; Miss Bowen, heather tweed, black jacket; Mrs Dymock, black silk ; * <J -— T ' l J brown and black moir6 levers.
