Dear Bee, July 12 We have had simply perfect weather here for the last month, and with the exception of a few harmless showers, hardly any rain at all. Wednesday night was the occasion of our SECOND STEEPLECHASE BALL. which was a great success. The night was lovely, and the floor and partners all that could be desired. We danced into the wee sma’ hours, enjoying ourselves immensely. There were about fifty couples present. It was difficult to pick out any particular belle, as so many different opinions were raised, but these are some of the dresses worn Mrs Willock was much admired in a becoming gown of figured silk with pale blue velvet bodice and lace trimmings: Mrs Jex. Blake, pretty white silk; Mrs Heale handsome ruby plush gown, pink silk trimmings; Mrs Nolan looked well in white silk, yellow silk sleeves; Mrs Mann looked charming in her wedding dress of cream merveilleux silk, chiffon trimmings: Mrs Innes, pale pink silk; Mrs Donner, becoming gown of pink silk; Mrs L. Rees was Srettily gowned in pale green silk, dark green velvet trimmings; [rs Reynolds, handsome black velvet dress: Miss Von Der Hyde, her debutante dress of pretty white silk; Miss Rees, grey silk dress: Miss M. Rees, dainty white muslin gown with chiffon sleeves; Miss R. Rees, pink silk gown; Miss Drummond, becoming combination of pale blue and myrtle green; Miss Tucker, pink satin : Miss M. Tucker, handsome figured silk : Miss M. Reynolds looked pretty in moss green velvet; Miss Williamson, black velvet gown with white silk sleeves; Miss Evans, scarlet silk with white lace trimmings; Miss Willis, black silk, pink velvet bodice trimmed with black lace; Miss Adair looked charming in white silk, heliotrope silk sleeves: Miss Crawford, white silk, and her sister, cardinal, silver trimming : Mrs Pyke was gowned in black velvet, scarlet silk bodice ; Mrs C. White looked d stinguee in scarletsilk : Mrs Symes, cream silk ; Miss A. Booth, pretty white silk : Miss Campbell, black, red velvet trimmings; Miss Gray looked chic in white silk ; Miss Bradley looked well in white silk ; Miss M. Bradley wo’e a charming dress of cream with olive green velvet trimmings: Miss N. Campbell, pale blue, pretty white cape trimmed with white astrachan; Miss McGowan, pale blue net. over pale blue silk. Among the gentlemen were Messrs Wethered, White. Bruce. Lysnar, Pyke, Williams, Willock. Staite, Mann, Tucker. Maude, Dodd. Beckett, Grant. Crawford, Gordon, Rees, Robertson, Murphy, Nolan, Dr. Heale. Dr Innes, etc. The steeplechase was to come off to-day. but I will send you an account of that next week. This is quite an exciting week for Gisborne with races, two dances, and Pollard’s Liliputian Opera. I expect everything to be quite dull for the next week or two after all this. Midgy.
