NELSON.

Dear Bee, July IC. PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE is still a favourite pastime in Nelson, and the latest of these enjoyable gatherings was held at the Boys' College last Saturday, when Miss OUivier gave a farewell evening to Mr Pearce. Six tables kept up play merrily, the prize-winners being Miss Gribben and Mr Green, the boobies falling to Miss K. Fell and Mr Littlejohn. Those present besides Miss Ollivier we p e Mrs Littlejohn, Misses Gibson, Gribben, Watt, N. Jones. Boor. Lightfoot, K. Fell, E. Fell (Picton). Gibbs. A. Bell, Messrs Littlejohn, Pearce, Cooke, Broad, Robison, Green, Duncan, Macdonald, W. Broad, A. Adams, and Dr. Gibbs. On Thursday evening a SURPRISE PARTY visited Mrs Leggatt and spent a merry time, dancing until early in the morning. Some of those present were Mrs and Miss Leggatt, Misses Fell (two). Miss E. Fell (Picton), Miss Wright. Miss Preshaw. Miss Rowley, and Messrs Preshaw, W, Broad, Macdonald, Squire. Tomlinson, Collins, etc. The annual Show in connection with the Pigeon, Poultry and Bird Association of Nelson was held on last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This year THE SHOW was more than usually successful. The number of entries was larger than formally and the attendance on the whole was good. On Friday evening the committee of the Association gave a supper to the judges, which was greatly appreciated. An energetic committee has been formed to make arrangements fora HOSPITAL BALL in Nelson. These balls seen- to be so enjoyable in other towns that little Nelson is also going to have one. and is determined to make it as successful as possible. It is to be held on the 15th August, so as not to clash with other festivities which are coming off. What a BITTER WINTER we are having. Poor Nelson, so far it has been the coldest town in New Zealand this winter. The only consolation is that it is healthy. Phyllis. Dear Bee, July 17. The third of Miss Huddlestone's ASSEMBLY DANCES eventuated on Wednesday, July 10th, and was a great success. All present seemed to enjoy themselves, and the hostess did all in her po ver to make the time pass pleasantly. Those present beside Miss Huddlestone were Mrs Bunny, Mrs De Castro. Mrs Roberts, Mrs Fell. Miss Worsley. Miss Stace, Miss King, Misses Macdonald (two). Misses Fell (two), Mies Fell (Pic’on). Miss Pitt, Messrs Devinish, Duncan. King, O'Beirne, Macdonald, De Castro, Dr. Roberts, etc. The theatre was occupied for two nights last week by the GWEN DAVIS COMPANY. For what reason it is hard to say, but they certainly were not well patronised in Nelson. The steamer being delayed, they tried to play another night, but as so few people went the money was returned to them and no performance took place. On Friday evening Mrs Glasgow entertained the young people of Nelson with a delightful little DANCE AT BROOKLANDS. and how they all enjoyed themselves! They can talk of nothing but the delights of that evening, and if they had not had a good time the fault would not have been their hostess’s, for all the arrangements were as perfect as they had been for their elders the week before. Mrs Glasgow received her young guests gowned in beautiful accordion pleated grenadine over black silk, dainty cap; Mrs A. Glasgow, becoming pink silk blouse, black silk skirt; Miss Glasgow and her sister. Miss R. Glasgow, both wore pretty black gowns: Miss Broad, evening blouse of green silk veiled with pink, black skirt. Of the young people. Miss Mabel Glasgow wore a pretty soft white silk with pale yellow; Miss A. Trolove looked pretty in pale blue veiling; her sister wore pale pink : Miss F. Webb-Bowen, cream with red ; Miss Ethel Ledger, very pretty frock of white striped gauze with pale green sash ; hei sister wore green and pink accordion pleated frock: Miss E. Binney, pale pink crepon ; her sister, pale yellow; Miss M. Harris aodher sister both wore pretty pale blue gowns; Miss Z. Broad, pink spotted muslin pale pink sash ; Miss M. Houlker. pretty cream and blue gown ; Miss R. L“ggatt. pale blue; Miss M. Preshaw. pink crepon ; Miss M. Blackett, pretty pale green; Miss M. Rowley, blue spotted muslin; Masters O'Beirne. Adams (three), Landels. Broad (two). Watts. Bailie, Leggatt (two). Levien (two), Collins, Blackett, Tomlinson (three), Robinson, etc. On Saturday evening the first meeting for this year of the GIRLS’ CLUB was held at the Girls’ College, and as usual a very jolly time was spent In acting, music, recitations, etc. These reunions are looked forward to by both past and present pupils, and this one was no exception to the rule. The next one is to be in about three weeks, when I hear a short play, entitled the ‘ Coming Woman,' is to bo performed. Phyllis.
