Notes from Auckland

The Council of the Trained Nurses' Association (Incorporated) gave a " Gift Afternoon " at the Club, m Queen Street, on February 23rd, which proved a very pleasant and successful function. There was a very large attendance of nurses and their friends, and the presence of Miss Maclean, Matron - in-Chief of the N.Z. Army Nursing Service, added an unexpected interest to the afternoon. Among those present were Miss Foote, President of the Central Council, Miss Orr, Lady Superintendent of the General Hospital, Mass Lita Jones, Mrs. Todd Smith, Miss Bagley, Mrs. Oliphant, Miss Campbell. Mrs. and Miss Maguire, Mrs. Connelly Robeitson, Mrs. Coldicutt, Miss Stewart. Owing t~> absence from town the President of the Association, Mrs. Kidd, was unable to be present. There was a large collection of gifts of all kinds and values, which promises well for the Garden Fete and Sale of Work which is to be held on Saturday the 13th of March, at Mrs. Kidd's beautiful residence, ' ' Hounslow, ' ' Gillies Avenue . The proceeds are m aid of the furnishing of the new Club, for which tenders are now called. Miss Maclean made a most interesting and timely speech, pointing out, among other matters for serious thought, the advantages to bo gained by joining the Association, and urging hose who are " almost persuaded/ 5 to decide and join.

Some beautiful singing, by Mrs. Maguire and other ladies, added to the entertainment , and Miss Elsie Maguire gave very enjoyable recitations ; one of them being the now well-known poem " The Day." A very dainty tea was much appreciated. The Garden Fete, so long anticipated, was held on Saturday, the 13th inst., and was a very pleasant and successful event. Mrs. Kidd's lovely grounds were ideal for the purpose, and the weather was perfect. The Hon. F. W. Lang opened the Fete. There was a large attendance and good business was done m the various stalls. The mysterious dimness of two fortune tellers' tents attracted a large number, who wanted to know their future fortune. Music on the lawn was much enjoyed, also that of a Highlander who played for the delightful dancing of some young pupils of Miss Knight. The following were the stall holders : Fancy goods, etc., Miss Kissling and Miss Austin ; plain and baby goods, Mrs. Todd Smith, Miss L. Fleming, Miss Haultain ; sweets, Mrs. and Miss Oliphant and Miss Leys ; pot plants, etc., Mrs. Gillies and Miss Bellingham ; Miss McGunn presided over a " dip " ; afternoon tea, Mrs. Maguire, Misses Orr, Robin, Lindsay and Maguire ; fortune tellers, Miss Smith and Miss Paterson. The members of the Association are sincerely

grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Kidd for all the trouble they have taken m helping to make the affair a success, and for the use of their beautiful grounds. Returns are not yet complete, but it is anticipated that the amount taken will reach £100 net.
