BROADCASTING ACCOUNT—continued.

REMARKS. (a) Item overexpended through extended publicity campaign which resulted in increased sales. (b) New item for expenditure previously charged to " Advertising, &C." i (c) Increase due to occupation of separate premises by Head Office. (d) Overexpenditure resulted from a reduction of debtors' balances as compared with previous year, and also, to a variation in the estimated proportion of direct to agency or commission-bearing business. (e) These expenses were formerly covered by an entertainment allowance paid to officers concerned, and provision was made in item " Salaries." (/) Provision extended to include haulage of mobile unit. (g) Extra provision made for lighting and power at new quarters for Head Office, and also for mobile unit. (h) Underexpenditure due mainly to final payments under contract for reconstruction of 3ZB studios not being brought to charge in 1938-39, also cost of fitting up premises in Government Life Building deferred until current year. (i) Extra provision made for nightwatchman at transmitter, Station 2ZB. (j) Extra provision for payment of overtime to technicians engaged on special duties. (k) Extra overtime rendered necessary by fire at Station 3ZB. (I) Item includes rental of space, which is offset by advertising. (m) Increased provision based on previous year's experience. (n) Provision made for new Head Office premises not utilized last financial year. (o) Expenditure in 1938-39 included provision of £587 for installation of special lines between studio and transmitter at Station 4ZB, Dunedin. (p) Transfers made in early part of year to effect a complete change in directorship of main ZB Stations. (q) Number of officers, 118. Travelling-expenses, £919 ; travelling-allowances, £871 ; motor-hire, £389 ; motor-car allowances, £57. (r) Design for travelling studio, £3 ; trig, bearings, new transmitter, IZB, £3 ; repairs private typewriter damaged in fire, 3ZB, £2 ; entertainment of visitors, reopening of 3ZB, £9 ; towage of private car after accident whilst on official business, £1 ; replacement of damaged records, £2 ; medical expenses of staff injured on duty, £12 ; repairs and replacement of damaged clothing, £6 : total, £38.
