Salaries of Public-school Teacheiis. The total amount of all salaries and allowances at the rate payable on the 31st December, 1915, was £846,810, an increase of £105,674 over the amount for 1914. This includes pupil-teachers' salaries and allowances, £35,335 ; probationers' salaries and allowances, £17,915; additional amounts paid to head teachers of district high schools, £1,710 ; additional amounts paid to associated normal teachers, £303 ; and house allowances, £23,835, to head or sole teachers who had no residence provided. However, the total does not include the corresponding amounts saved in rent where houses are provided, estimated at £30,975. The unusual increase in expenditure on salaries was, of course, due to the provisions of the Education Act, 1914, and the increase is reflected in the average rates of salary for adult teachers in. public primary schools as set out below: — Average Salaries of (1.)
