No. 608.—Petition of M. La Mont and 230 Others, of Wareatea North, Buller. Petitioners pray that the representation of the Buller County regarding the Riding of Wareatea North be readjusted. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 27th October, 1906.

Expenditure of Public Money. I am directed to report that this Committee recommends that in future all petitions for the expenditure of public money should be referred to the Government direct, seeing that in every case the Committee simply refers the petition to the Government for consideration, and that the adoption of the course suggested would result in the saving of much time, which could be devoted to the legitimate business of the Committee. 27th October, 1906. Final Report. I am directed to report,— 1. That during the session the Committee has held fourteen meetings. 2. That the Committee received 201 petitions, including four held over from last session. , 3. Number of specific recommendations, 5. 4. Number referred for favourable consideration, 17. 5. Number referred for consideration, 38. 6. Number no recommendation, &c, 32. 7. Number referred to other Committees, 2. 8. Number held over until next session, 13. 9. That a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Chairman, Mr. F. Lawry, for the able, attentive, and courteous manner in which he has conducted the business of the Committee. 10. That the clerk, Mr. E. D. Dunne, be commended for the manner in which he has carried out out his duties in connection with the Committee. 27th October, 1906.
