£1,500; expenditure in 1905, £411 19s. 2d.: surplus, £1,088 Os. lOd. The whole of this surplus will be required to make adequate provision for the requirements and equipment of the School of Mines now to be established, as advertisements are about to be issued for a Professor of Mining. 5. Endowments. —The income from endowments in 1905 was £738 17s. 9d., and the expenditure was £58 14s. lid., leaving a net revenue of £680 2s. lOd. 6. Degrees and Honours. —The degrees and honours gained at last November examinations of the University of New Zealand are as follow : Masters of Arts, 4 ; Honours in Arts, 3 ; Honours in Law, 1; Honours in Science, 1; senior scholarships, 2; first examination LL.B., 3; second examination LL.B., 2; first section B.Sc, 2; second section B.Sc, 3; first section 8.A., 7; second section 8.A., 7; first Mus. Bac., 2; final Mus. Bac, 1; first Civil Engineering, 1; first Mining Engineering, 1; third Metallurgical -Engineering, 1; first Bachelor of Commerce, section 1, 1; whole, 1; Certificate of Proficiency, 2. Eight students of this College held University Scholarships during the year. 7. Sinclair Scholarship. —This scholarship, of the value of £70 per annum, tenable for three years, was awarded to Susannah Wildman. 8. School of Mines. —lt has not been deemed advisable to start a School of Mines in this College until a Professor of Mining was obtained to direct and manage such school. With the view of getting a suitable officer for that position advertisements have been inserted in the newspapers of England, United States, Australia, and New Zealand, inviting applications for the position, and there is no doubt a suitable candidate for the post will be obtained early in the ensuing year. 9. Grant of £5,000. —The obtaining of this grant is dependent on a suitable site being obtained before the end of the current financial year on 31st March proximo, but it is to be hoped that if the grant should lapse Parliament will renew the vote, so as to keep this part of the colony on the same level as Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington in regard to University Buildings. 10. Site for New Buildings. —Several sites in the city and adjoining suburbs were inspected at the end of 1905 by the College Council in conjunction with the Secretary of Education (Mr. Hogben), but no selection was made. It is the unanimous opinion of the Council, and also of the Professorial Board, that the interests and convenience of the students require that the new buildings should be within the city boundaries. The present site, being only 1 acre in extent, does not afford room for such a college building as Auckland is entitled to, and it would not be advisable to demolish the present college buildings and rebuild on the present site, as, with the new schools of Law, Commerce, and Mining, the present buildings—although of wood, and over fifty years old—may still be required. 11. Accounts. —The accounts will be forwarded as soon as the Audit Inspector has passed them. I have, &c, G. Maurice O'Roeke, Chairman. The Right Hon. the Minister of Education, Wellington.
