The Chaieman of the College to the Hon. the Minister of Education. g IE University College, Auckland, 9th June, 1900. In pursuance of section 25 of "The Auckland University College Act, 1882," the Council has the honour of making the following report:— 1 The number of persons who attended lectures in this College m 1899 was 220 : Graduates, 11 (males, 9; females, 2); undergraduates, 97 (males, 73; females, 24); and non-matriculated students, 112 (males, 66; females, 46). There were also 19 students exempted from attendance at lectures :of these 2, however, did attend lectures more or less. The total number of students was thus 239. , , ~, _. .. , _. 2 Council—Mi. Gerald Loftus Peacocke was reappomted a member of the Council by His Excellency the Governor in Council; the Most Eeverend Bishop Cowie was re-elected member of the Council by members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland ; and Mr. Charles Thomas Major, M.A., B.Sc, was re-elected a member of the Council by graduates of the University of New Zealand. . 3 Professors and Lecturers. —Dr. McArthur was appointed Lecturer on History and Political Economy on the 28th November, 1898, and delivered lectures on these subjects during session 1899. Mr. Ashley Hunter, C.E., was appointed Lecturer on Mechanical Drawing and Engineering subjects on the 28th November, 1898, and delivered lectures on these subjects during session 1899. 4 Increased Accommodation.—A large addition, consisting of four new lecture-rooms, with private rooms for Chairman, Professors, and Registrar, a Council chamber, and common rooms for students has been completed and partly furnished, at a cost of £1,270 14s. 4d., of which sum £1,000 was a parliamentary grant of 1898. In order to complete the furnishing, and to provide the appliances recommended by the architect as a suitable precaution against fire, it will be necessary to expend a further sum of £250 or thereabouts. The buildings, when complete and furnished, will m every respect suffice to meet the present requirements of the College. 5 Income.— From the statement of accounts it will be seen that the income of the College is barely sufficient to provide for the inevitable demands made upon it. Though the strictest economy has been exercised in every department of expenditure, the Council has not been in a position to extend the benefits of the College as they would have done had the funds at their disposal been adequate for that purpose. The Council have laid a full statement of their position before the Government in a memorial drawn up by the Chairman, and they hope that this will induce Government to render assistance to the College in carrying on university work.
