REPORT

Mr. G. E. Bradley, who held the office of Kegistrar since 1944, retired from the Service at the end of the year. The friendly societies have expressed their appreciation of the generous help and guidance given by Mr. Bradley throughout his forty-one years of service. PART I.—FRIENDLY SOCIETIES Registrations One society was registered during the year —W.M.C. : Onehunga Working-men's Club. The following registrations were cancelled by request —1.0.0. F. : Centenary Lodge, Tokomaru Bay Lodge, and Iti Rebekah Lodge. A.O.E. : Court Pongaroa (Wellington District). H.A.C.B.S. : St. Joseph's Branch No. 858, Wellington (N.Z. District). G.U.0.0.F. : Star of Newtown Branch, Loyal Onslow Branch, Arahina Branch, and Loyal Coronation Branch. One amalgamation was registered—M.U.l.O.O.F. : Victoria Lodge with Milton Lodge (Otago District). One instrument of dissolution was registered —A.0.F.: Court Clarendon (Courtout of District). There were 1,047 registrations at 31st December, 1947.

Amendments op Rules The rules of thirty-six societies and branches were amended during 1947, four by complete amendment, and thirty-two by partial amendment. The total funds of the societies and branches as at 31st December, 1947, amounted to £6,419,523, made up as follows : Sick and Funeral Funds (inclusive of amounts transferred to special funds out of surplus), £5,895,785 ; Medical and Management Funds, goods, &c., £523,738. Dividing the total funds by the number of members at the end of the year it is found the average capital per member is now £Bl 15s. sd. The following statement shows the disposal of the total funds (including those of the central bodies) as at the 31st December, 1947 :

Sickness The number of members sick during 1947 was 15,883, equal to 21 per 100 members at risk. The sickness experienced during 1947 was 324,038 weeks, equal to 20 weeks 2 days per sick member and 4 weeks 2 days for each member at risk. ■Mortality The number of members who died during 1947 was 1,158, equal to 14-57 per 1,000 members at risk. The number of wives of members who died was 371. Sick and Funeral Funds The contributions and entrance fees paid to Sick and Funeral Funds in 1947 amounted to £151,069. Divided by the mean number of members, the average for 1947 was £1 18s., as against £1 18s. 2d. for 1946. The interest and rent received by the lodges and central bodies amounted to £221,966 in 1947, equal to £2 15s. lOd. per member, as against £2 13s. 2d. for 1946. The amount of sickness benefit paid was £176,642 in 1947, equal to £ll 2s. sd. per member sick and £2 4s. sd. per member, as against £lO 9s. 3d. and £2 ss. 3d. respectively for 1946. Viewing the amount paid in relation to the weeks of sickness, the average benefit per week is found to be 10s. lid. in 1947, as against lis. 4d. for 1946. The funeral benefit paid amounted to £63,478 in 1947, equal to 16s. per member, as compared with 14s. Bd. for 1946. The total worth of the Sick and Funeral Funds at the beginning of 1947 was £5,122,801, and at the end of the year £5,242,722. Investment of Funds The net income from investments credited to the Sick and Funeral Funds for 1947 amounted to £221,966, the average rate being £4 7s. 6d. per cent., as against £4 Bs. 2d. in 1946. PART lI.—TRADE-UNIONS There were three unions on the register at the end of the year.
