ORDERS OF REFERENCE Extracts from thei Journals of the House of Representatives Wednesday, the 18th Day oe July, 1945 Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from M to Z which may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon' to this House: the Committee to consist of Mr. P. Carr, Mr. Denham, Mr. Gillespie, Mr. Hodgens, Mr. Kidd, Mr. Langstone, Mi'. Neilson, Mr. Sim, Mr. T. C. Webb, and the Mover." —(Hon Mr. O'Brien.)Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1944 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Hon. Mr. Nash.) Tuesday, the 9th Day or October, 1945 Ordered, " That the Public Petitions M to Z Committee be increased, by leave, to eleven members by the addition of the name of Mr. Chapman."—(Hon. REPORTS No. 87/1944. —Petition of Florence E. Stevenson, of Gisborne Praying for investigation of her claim to a war widow s pension. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 9th August, 1945.
No. 110/1944.—Petition of T. W. Neild, of Te Kopuru Praying that he be granted a retiring-allowance in consideration of his service with the Police Force. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 9th August, 1945.
No. 6.—Petition of Mrs. Jane E. Thorpe, of Oamaru Praying for ail increased war pension. I am directed to report that, as a question of policy is involved, the Committee regrets that it has no recommendation to make. 30th August, 1945.

No. 13.—Petition of A. J. Simpson, of Christchurch Praying for a review of his claim for increased war pension and compensation. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 30th August, 1945.
No. 27.—Petition of A. Mac Donald, of Buchanan's Road, Yaldhurst, Christchurch Praying that, on account of his previous war service, he be enabled to participate in the rehabilitation benefits offered to returned servicemen of the present war in acquiring land for farming. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth September, 1945.
No. 39.—Petition of Alma H. D. Ward, of 46 Mulgrave Street, Wellington Praying for compensation for alleged wrongful committal to a mental institution and for increased alimony. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 26th September, 1945.
No. 3.—Petition of J. J. P. McDougall, of 158 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland Praying for an inquiry into alleged illegal conduct of a Probation Officer. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 7th November, 1945.
No. 67.—Petition of W. Smith, of 5 Hall Street, Wellington S. 1 Praying for additional compensation. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 14th November, 1945.
No. 88.—Petition of J. P. McDavitt, of 15b Konini Street, Eastbourne Praying that husbands and wives be permitted to use adjoining seats in the galleries of the House. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. The Committee is of opinion that the spaces now known as the Ladies' Gallery, together with the Men's Public Gallery, be made available for seating accommodation for both sexes. 14th November, 1945.
No. 98.—Petition of J. Oliver, of 15 Heaton Road, Timaru, and 809 Others ' Praying for local bodies to undertake certain works at Waimataitai Beach, Timaru. I am directed to report the Committee regrets it is unable to make any recommendation. sth December, 1945.
Special Report I am directed to report that this Committee desires to place on record its sense of appreciation of the efficient services rendered by the Clerk to the Committee, Mr. M. S. Pasley.
