(a) An agricultural development committee requires considerable data, and much of the necessary information will arise from activities in the realm of rural development and economics. lb) Return of some officers from military service, Veterinarians from overseas, and certain increases to stall. lc) £50 provided on main estimates. Cars for research workers—particularly at present in respect to facial eczema. Id) £24 500 provided in main estimates. This station has great potentialities. The wages required were underestimated and £4 500 further provision is necessary ; an extensive programme in connection with artificial insemination of stock requires additional apparatus, &c., expected to cost £500 ; movement of laboratory equipment from other locations is estimated to cost £1,000. (e) £200 provided on main estimates. Officers arc being moved to Ruakura to facilitate research activities particularly in laboratory aspeots of the work. . . ( f) The intention is that, up to the amount provided, the Government will share, on a pound-for-pound basis, in the establishment costs of a piggery. (a) Increased establishment has been authorized to provide extra night staff and thus abolish the present practice of staff " sleeping-in." An additional engine-driver has been appointed at Tokanui. The additional amount for allowances to officers is due to the appointment of an extra Deputy Medical Superintendent. (b) Subsidy to Christchurch Tramway Board for bus service to Templeton Farm. (c) it is unlikely that all the extra staff authorized to provide extra night staff will be available. RAILWAYS: IMPROVEMENTS AND ADDITIONS TO OPEN LINES

(a) The completion of these two urgent works is being accelerated. £138,000 and £12,000 respectively provided on main estimates. (b) The inadequacy of the present office accommodation has rendered it impracticable to further delay this essential work. (c) The easing-off of work previously undertaken in the Workshops for the Armed Services and Government Departments, together with the improved man-power situation and the receipt of material from overseas, has rendered it practicable to speed up the programme of replacement and renewal of locomotives, cars, and wagons. £701,040 provided on main estimates. (d) Material having come to hand, the provision of these facilities is being expedited, mainly on the South Island Main Trunk (Picton-Ward-Waipara Section) and between Westport and Stillwater. £34,275 and £90,229 respectively provided on main estimates.
