Table M5.—SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES at the Examinations for Degrees in 1940.

* Three scholarships awarded without emolument. In addition to these successes, 2 passed for Diploma of Honours, 4,139 candidates passed sections of the examinations for degrees or for admission to professions; 100 gained certificates of proficiency. There were 296 candidates (including bursary candidates) for the Entrance Scholarship Examination, 30 gaining scholarships, 119f others passing the examination with credit, and l(i qualifying for University Entrance. The number of entrants for the University Entrance Examination was 5,191, of whom 2,308 passed the examination. 254 candidates entered the University Entrance Examination to gain a further qualification, and of these 177 passed. t Four of these were awarded Taranaki Scholarships.
