LEASE OF PREMISES BY GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS. PARTICULARS OF LEASE BY GOVERNMENT OF PORTION OF WELLINGTON PUBLISHING CO'S BUILDING IN MERCER STREET, WELLINGTON, FOR USE BY RAILWAY AND TOURIST DEPARTMENTS.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 7th August, 1929. Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The term of the lease by the Government of portion of the Wellington Publishing Co.'s building in Mercer Street, Wellington, for use by the Railway and Tourist Departments ; (2) the date of commencement of such lease ; (3) the rental being paid for such premises ; (4) the date when the said premises were first occupied by the said Departments respectively ; and (5) whether the lease or leases of the premises previously occupied by the said Departments had expired when occupation of the premises in Mercer Street was taken, and, if not, the amount of rent which had to be paid for the premises previously occupied from the date of vacation to the end of the lease or leases."—(Colonel McDonald.)

RETURN. (1) Term of lease by the Government of portion of the Wellington Publishing Co.'s building in Mercer Street, Wellington, for use by the Railway and Tourist Departments :— Five years, with right of renewal for five years. (2) Date of commencement of such lease : — Ist December, 1927. (.3) The rental of such premises :— £1,144 per annum. (4) Date when such premises were first occupied by the said Departments respectively : — Railway Department, Ist December, 1927 ; Tourist Department, 9th January, 1928. (5) Whether the lease or leases of the premises previously occupied by the said Departments had expired when occupation of the premises in Mercer Street was taken, and, if not, the amount of rent which had to be paid for the premises previously occupied from the date of vacation to the end of the lease or leases :— The lease of the Railway Booking Office, Willis Street, had expired 30th November, 1927. The lease of the Tourist Office (Huddart-Parker Building) had not expired. The rent was £500 per annum for seven years from 9th October, 1925. It was vacated by the Tourist Department in January, 1928, and, with the exception of about three months, has since been occupied by other Departments. The rent to be paid when Tourist Department vacated was £1,875.
