GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS SUPERANNUATION FUND. REPORT OF BOARD.

Laid before Parliament in pursuance of Section, 91 of the Government Railways Act, 1908.

In accordance with section 91 of the Government Bailways Act, 1908, the Board has the honour to transmit, for the information of Parliament, its balance-sheet, which shows the transactions in the Government Bailways Superannuation Fund for the year ended 31st March, 1922. The superannuation allowances actually paid during the year amounted to £123,439 13s. 6d., representing grants to 1,202 members of the Bailway service who have either voluntarily resigned or been retired as medically unfit. Allowances amounting to £13,934 14s. Bd. were paid in respect to 420 widows and 561 children, dependants of deceased members of the service who had not retired on superannuation at the time of their death. Payments amounting to £1,217 10s. 7d. wero made to the legal representatives of the deceased members under section 86, subsection (c), ami section 82, subsection (6), of the Act. A sum of £15,907 18s. Id., representing contributions of membais of the service who voluntarily retired or whose services were otherwise dispensed with during the year, was refunded to the members concerned in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Travelling-expenses of members of the.Board amounted to £50 175.; fines remitted to members, £1 55.; and charges paid to Public Trust Office, £455 13s. 6d. The balance to the credit of the accumulated fund on the 31st March, 1922, was £543,531 10s. Bd., an increase of £79,040 13s. Bd. The gross income for the year was £233,826 Is. Bd. The income from contributions of members of the fund amounted to £135,884 6s. 4d., or £12,207 19s. 9d. less than the actual annual liability on 31st March. The fund was relieved of an annual liability of £47,614 4s. 4d. in respect to these 653 members ; 502 children have reached the age of fourteen years, 14 children have died, 94 widows remarried, 50 widows died; lessening the liability of the fund by an additional £9,300 per annum.
