GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS SUPERANNUATION FUND. REPORT OF BOARD.

Laid before Parliament in pursuance of Section 91 of the Government Railways Act, 1908.

In accordance with section 91 of the Government Eailways Act, 1908, the Board has the honour to transmit, for the information of Parliament, its balance-sheet, which shows the transactions in the Government Eailways Superannuation Fund for the year ended 31st March, 1920. The superannuation allowances actually paid during the year amounted to £94,464 4s. Id., representing grants to 1,117 members of the Eailway service who have either voluntarily resigned or been retired as medically unfit. Allowances amounting to £13,337 12s. 4d. were paid in respect to 391 widows and 547 children, dependants of deceased members of the service who had not retired on superannuation at the time of their death. Payments amounting to £1,051 16s. Id. were made to the legal representatives of the deceased members under section 86, subsection (c), and section 82, subsection (3), of the Act. A sum of £42,748 12s. 2d., representing contributions of members of the service who voluntarily retired or whose services were otherwise dispensed with during the year, was refunded to the members concerned in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Travelling-expenses of members of the Board amounted to £57 7s. 2d.; contributions transferred to Public Service Superannuation Fund, £190 9s. 7d. ; and charges paid to Public Trust Office, £305 3s. 3d. The balance to the credit of the accumulated fund on the 31st March, 1920, was £408,232 10s. Bd., an increase of £44,428 6s. 4d. The gross income for the year was £196,615 3s. The income from contributions of members of the fund amounted to £104,130 4s. lid., or £11,677 9s. sd. less than the actual annual liability on 31st March. The fund was relieved of an annual liability of £38,423 9s. 7d. in respect to these 543 members; 412 children have reached the age of fourteen years, 9 children have died, 65 widows remarried, 38 widows died, 1 widow refused allowance, and 1 allowance remains unclaimed; lessening the liability of the fund by an additional £7,378 15s. 9d. per annum. There were 1,941 persons actually on the fund at the 31st March, 1920, involving an annual liability of £115,807 14s. 4d. W. F.
