ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 29th Day of June, 1917. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to assist Mr. Speaker in all matters which relate to the reporting of debates and to the printing executed by order of tho House, and for the purpose of selecting and arranging for tho printing of the returns and papers presented in pursuance of motions made by members of this House; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. T. A. H. Field, Mr. Fletcher, Mr. Harris, Hon. Mr. Herdman, Mr. Jennings, Hon. Mr. Ngata, Mr. G. H. Smith, Hon. Mr. Speaker, Mr. Wright, and the mover."— (Hon. Mr. Russell.) Thursday, the sth Day oe July, 1917. Ordered, " That the Reporting Debates and Printing Committee appointed by this House have power to confer and sit together with any similar Committee which may be appointed by the Legislative Council." —(Hon. Mr. Russell.)

EETOKTS, Compression op " Hansard." By direction of the Joint Reporting Debates and Printing Committee I have the honour to report, — 1. That in the reporting of Imprest Supply, the financial debate, Address in Reply, no-confidence motions, and the second and third reading of Bills no change be made, but that discussion on the introduction of Bills be not reported. 2. That interjections and replies thereto be omitted unless pertinent to the discussion. 8. That the Hansard record of the progress of Bills through Committee show only substantial amendments, and questions upon which divisions are taken. 4. That the report in Committee of Supply be reduced to a concise record of inquiries regarding, and of reasons for and against, votes and items, and that only votes upon which discussion takes place be set out in Hansard. 5. That the reporting on matters other than those mentioned in paragraph 1 be judiciously condensed. Full shorthand notes shall, however, be taken. 11th July, 1917. Supply op Copies of " Hansard." By direction of the Joint Reporting Debates and Printing Committee I have the honour to report : The Committee recommends that twenty-five copies of Hansard be supplied to members of the House of Representatives ; also the Committee recommends that five copies of Hansard be supplied to members of the Legislative Council. 11th July, 1917. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Committee desires to place on record the valued services rendered by the Chairman, Mr. R. A. Wright, whose unfailing attention and uniform courtesy are much appreciated by the members of the Committee, and that this resolution be reported to the House. 27th October, 1917. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Reporting Debates and Printing Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the courtesy and attention of the Clerk, Mr. F. E. Tomlinson, who has proved himself untiring in the discharge of his duties and of much help to the Committee; and that this resolution be reported to the House. 27th October, 1917. Final Report. lam directed to report that the Committee held seven meetings during the session. The number of papers referred to the Committee for consideration, 240 ; the number of papers ordered to be printed, 25 ; and the number of papers not ordered to be printed, 215. The Committee is of opinion that there are many papers ordered by the House to be printed the importance of which does not warrant the expenditure. Also, that the attention of the Minister in charge of the Printing Department be drawn to the excessive number of Gazettes posted to the free list, with the object of this list being revised. 27th October, 1917.
