DEFENCE DEPARTMENT: PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO SERVICE OF YOUTHS UNDER DEFENCE ACT.

Return to an Order of the Rouse of Representatives dated the 9th July, 1913. Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The number of youths who have been convicted once for breaches of the Defence Aot; (2) the number of youths convicted twice; (3) the number of youths oonvioted three times and over; (4) the number of youths registered to serve under the Defence Aot; and (5) the actual number now serving under the Defence Aot."—(Mr. Witty.)

Eetoen. 1. The number of youths who have been convicted once for breaches of the Defence Act is 3,108. 2. The number of youths convicted twice is 241. 3. The number of youths convicted three times and over is 43. 4. The number of youths registered to serve under the Defence Act is 71,568. 5. The actual number now serving under the Defence Act is 52,356. Note. —The above particulars cover the period from the initiation of the system of compulsory military training up to the 30th June, 1913, and include all liable for service in Territorial Force and Senior Cadets.
