No. 87. —Petition of Alexander McDonald, of Ngakawau, Westport. Petitioner prays for compensation for services as overseer in the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 23rd August, 1911.

No. 51. —Petition of Catherine T. McGahey, of Wadestown, Wellington. Petitioner prays that she may be, allowed a further sum of money as compassionate allowance for services rendered by her late husband. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a recommendation that the petitioner should be granted £100. 23rd August, 1911.

No. 745 (1910). —Petition of John O'Kane and 1,210 Others, of Hastings. Petitioners pray that the Government pass legislation for supplying the town of Hastings with electrical power, water-supply, and drainage. I am directed to report that the Committee lias no recommendation to make, as a question of policy is involved. 23rd August, 19] 1.

No. 745 (1910).—Petition of T. Tanner and 184 Others, of Hawke's Bay. Petitioners pray that the Pukahu Hiding be excluded from the operation of the Hawke's BaA Rivers Bill. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition, as the matter has been dealt with by legislation. 23rd August, 1911.

No. 82.—Petition of Eugenic Tillman, of Woolston. Petitioner prays for a compassionate allowance on account of the death of her husband, an overseer in the Public Works Department. 1 am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, with a recommendation that the petitioner should be granted a sum of £25. 23rd August, 1911.

Nos. 85 and 86.—Petitions of Emily Meynell and Archibald Crichton, of Miramar, Wellington. Petitioners pray for an inquiry into the conduct of the police that led up to the committal of the children of the said Emily Meynell to a Government receiving home, and for the return of the said children. I am directed to report that, until legal relationships are established between the petitioners, the Committee is of opinion that the Meynell children should not be returned to the home of their mother. 31st August, 1911.

No. 46. —Petition of Albert Plummer, of Auckland. Petitioner prays for compensation for loss on account of contract with the Government at the Chatham Islands in 1868. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition, 31st August, 1911,

Mr. Craigie, to the business of the Committee, and of the able and courteous manner in which his duties have been carried out during this session of Parliament; and that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the Hnust;. 24th October, 1911.

Special Report (re Clerk). I am directed to report that the Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the services of the clerk, Mr. J. l>. Haselden, and that the Government be recommended to permanently appoint him, so that the Committee will be assured of his capable services and experience for future sessions. 20th October, 1911.
