Copy of Agreement between New Zealand Government and Mr. G. V. Shannon. Sir,— 20th October, 1888. The Government having considered the several applications for the position of mercantile expert in connection with this Department, I have the honour to inform you that they have decided to make the following arrangement with you, viz.—it being understood that you are to give your whole time and energies in the protection of the revenue from fraud, &c. : you will be allowed pay at the rate of £800 from the Ist November next until the 30th June, 1889, together with travelling-allowance at the rate ot £1 10s. a day whilst travelling on public service, including your stay at Wellington ; and you will receive one-fourth share of all net proceeds of seizures and penalties recovered directly through your action. It is understood further that you will be subordinate only to the Commissioner and Secretary. From the latter you will receive your instructions when required. The Government undertake to place upon the estimates, and use their best endeavours to carry through Parliament, a vote each year for three years, in order to give effect to the terms of the arrangement made with you.
