Return of Subsidised Medical Officers for Natives, &c.— continued. South Island.

The extent of the district intended to be served by each medical officer cannot be stated, nor can any estimate of the Maori population of such district be given. The general terms under which a medical officer receives a subsidy are that he will supply free medicine and advice at all times to all Maoris at his surgery or within a stated distance therefrom if the patient be to ill or infirm to come to the surgery. Attendance on Maoris at a greater distance to be paid for at a mileage rate. Probably Maoris living within a radius of ten to twenty miles will upon occasion visit the medical officer to obtain medicine and advice. H. F. Bdgek, Native Department, Wellington, 21st September, 1906. Under-Secretary. Approximate Cost of Paper. —Preparation, not given; printing (1,450 copies), £1 ss.
