No. 224.—Petition of Thomas Walsh, of New Plymouth. Petitioner alleges that, in consequence of an accident on the railway, he was obliged to retire, after nearly nineteen years' faithful service, without compensation. He praj's for a retiringallowance. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 30th August, 1905.

No. 280.—Petition of George J. Walsh, of Wellington. Petitioner prays for monetary consideration on loss of office. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 30th August, 1905.

No. 62.—Petition of Hifawani Karawhiu and 90 Others, of Waitoki. Petitioners pray that a railway-station may be established near their kainga at Waitoki, to •enable their children to attend school. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the attention of the Railway Department should be called to the case, with a view to facilities being provided for the children in question, or, failing that, the Minister of Education should-see that school accommodation is provided. 30th August, 1905.

No. 141.—Petition of Thomas Patterson, of Brown Street, Invercargill. Petitioner prays that the recommendation of the Public Petitions M to Z and the Railways Committees, made on four separate occasions, awarding him compensation, may be given effect to. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 30th August, 1905.

No. 20.—Petition of William F. Hickenbotham, of Dunedin. Petitioner prays for a sum of money on account of insufficient salary. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that no reflection as to the personal •conduct of Hickenbotham was made by the Department; that, though a competent forgeman, his work by comparison with others was not satisfactory, and that there was no obligation under Hickenbotham's agreement with the Department for his services to be continued on its expiry. 22nd September, 1905.

No. 191.—Petition of D. Sullivan and 192 Others, of Ohura. Petitioners pray for some responsible person to be placed in charge of goods-shed at the Ongarue Station. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition should be referred to tbe Government for consideration. 22nd September, 1905.

No. 65.—Petition of John Cronin. Petitioner prays for compassionate allowance on account of injuries received to hand. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 22nd September, 1905.

No. 150.—Petition of Sarah Reed, Widow, of Normanby Road, Mount Eden, Auckland. Petitioner prays for relief on account of the death of her husband by railway accident. I am -directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd October, 1905.

No. 450.—Petition of John Soott, Platelayer. Petitioner prays for compensation on account of injuries sustained while working on the New .'Zealand railways, and asking for further support. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd October, 1905.

No. 440.—Petition of Silas Papprill, Painter. Petitioner prays for compensation on account of loss of eyesight while following the occupation •of painter on the New Zealand Government railways. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 3rd October, 1905.

No. 15.—Petition of William Conyers, of New Zealand Chambers, 483, Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Petitioner prays for relief on account of former services. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that the petitioner has been fully compensated by the colony, and that it has no recommendation to make. 3rd October, 1905.

No. 42.—Petition of John D. Cooper, of North Canterbury, Shepherd. Petitioner alleges that in consequence of a railway accident at Kaitoke he was run over by an approaching train, and the result leaving him a cripple for the rest of his life, he prays for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that no blame whatever attaches to the Railway Department, but that as a matter of grace the Government be recommended to. pay to the petitioner the sum of £100, and also expenses incurred in the Wellington Hospital. 3rd October, 1905.

No. 2.—Petition of Hannah Thomson, of Timaru. Petitioner prays for relief on account of the death of her husband while in the service of the •Government Railways. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th October, 1905.

Nos. 530, 567, and 568.—-Petitions of Charles Horace Gilbey, Christchurch- C. J. Jennings and 20 Others, Rangiora- and George Gardner and 46 Others, Medbury. Petitioners pray that children attending technical classes in Christchurch may have school season tickets issued. I am directed to report that, in the opinion of this Committee, these petitions should be referred to the Education Committee. 10th October, 1905.

No. 547. —Petition of John Jardine, of 71, York Place, Dunedin. Petitioner prays for compensation on account of accident while shunting. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th October, 1905.

No. 224. —Petition of Thomas Walsh, of New Plymouth. Petitioner prays for relief on account of injuries received on a railway-train. I am directed to report that this Committee has no further recommendation to make. 10th October, 1905.

No. 430.—Petition of Edwin George Sturgess, of Sumner, Canterbury. Petitioner prays to be reinstated in the Railway service or pensioned off. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 10th October, 1905.

No. 143.—Petition of John Tammadge, of Te Kuiti. Petitioner prays that the by-law which prohibits the carriage of liquor to stations south of Te Awamutu be rescinded. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 12th October, 1905.

No. 516. —Petition of John McKnight and 11 Others, Greymouth. Petitioners pray that their employment in the Government Railway should date from the 27th May, 1895. I am directed to report by this Committee that the claim of the petitioners is a just one, and their case is referred to the most favourable consideration of the Government. 12th October, 1905.

No. 442.—Petition of A. Lee Smith and 2,207 Others. Petitioners pray for the extension of the Walton Park Railway to Brighton. I am directed to report that, this matter being a question of policy, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 12th October, 1905.

No. 96. —Petition of Dennis Sheehyn, Masterton. Petitioner prays for compensation for loss of property by fire. I am directed to report that this petition be referred to the favourable consideration of the Government, the Committee recommending the burnt fencing to be reinstated by the Railway Department, and £50 paid to the petitioner in full of all demands. This recommendation to be without prejudice to any future proceedings that may be contemplated. 13th October, 1905.

No. 39. —Petition of William Gardner, of Kensington, Caversham. Petitioner prays for superannuation for full time of service. I am directed to report that this Committee has no recommendation to make. 13th October, 1905.

No. 557.—Petition of J. Clark and 80 Others, Settlers, of Omahu, Thames County. Petitioners pray that settlers may use the quarry at Omahu now owned by the Department. I am directed to report that this petition be referred to the favourable consideration of the Government. 13th October, 1905.

No. 590.—Petition of Mary P.' Looney, Widow, of Wellington. Petitioner prays for compensation on account of the death of her husband by railway accident. I am directed to report that this petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 23rd October, 1905.

No. 410.—Petition of James Martin and 100 Others, Otahuhu. Petitioners ask that an existing train should continue its journey to Drury, and remain there at night instead of Otahuhu. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1905.

No. 34.--Petition of Samuel Vaile, Auckland. Petitioner prays for an inquiry to be made into Railway expenditure. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1905.

No. 132.—Petition of Samuel Vaile, Auckland. Petitioner prays for trial of Vaile's stage system. I am directed to report that this petition be referred to the Government for consideration 23rd October, 1905.

No. 536.—Petition of David Wallace and 52 Others, Clinton Petitioners ask that better facilities be provided at Clinton Railway-station for loading. I am directed to report that this petition be rsferred to the Government for favourable consideration. 23rd October, 1905.

No. 379.—Petition of G. Walker and 49 Others, Otahuhu. Petitioners ask that an existing train should continue its journey to Drury, and remain there lit night instead of Otahuhu. T am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1905.
