Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly pursuant to "The Friendly Societies Act 1882," Section 5, Subsection (8).

TRANSACTIONS DURING THE YEAR 1901. Registration of Societies and Branches. 1. The total number of registrations during the year 1901 was 17, distributed thus • M U I O O F * o lodges; 1.0.0. Registration of New Rules. 5. Registration of a complete amendment of of a complete set of new rules—was made irt respect of the undermentioned societies and branches : — M.U.1.0.0.F.— Renwick Lodge (Marlborough District); Nelson District; Naseby, Mosgiel, Palmerston, and Dunedin Lodges (Otago District). A.O.F. —Court Enterprise (United Otago District). U.A.O.D.—District Grand Lodge, North Island of New Zealand; Grand Lodge o Canterbury District. W.M.C. — Auckland, and Garibaldi Clubs. I.S.S. —Wellington United Friendly Societies' Dispensary. Registration of Partial Amendment of Rules. 6. Registration of a partial amendment of rales was made in respect of the undermentioned societies and branches :— M.U.1.0.0.F. —Auckland District (2); John Leydon Lodge (Auckland District) ; Hawke's Bay District; Napier Lodge (Hawke's Bay District) ; and Wellington District. A.O.F.—Hawke's Bay District; Taranaki District; Wellington District; United Otago District; and Court Pride of Dunedin (United Otago District). 1.0.R. —New Zealand Central District; and Gisborne Tent (New Zealand Central District). S.D.T.—National Division of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance. I.S.S. —Auckland United Friendly Societies' Conference. Change of Name. The Invercargill District of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows changed its name to the " Southland District of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows." Statistics for 1900. 7. The number of lodges* whose returns are tabulated is 443, and of central bodies 35, distributed according to Orders thus : —

8. In Tables 1., V., and VI., attached to this report, the respective district totals include the funds of the central bodies. 9. In the final column of Table I. is entered the average surplus or deficiency per member, as shown at the last valuation of the society. 10. In the monetary tables, except the first, shillings and pence have been omitted, there being no apparent advantage in publishing the values more accurately than as shown by the nearest pound. 11. The number of members of these lodges at the end of the year was 40,257. 12. Valuations were made of the following societies: M.U.l.O.O.F.—Nelson District; Lyttelton District. A.O.F.—Taranaki District; Nelson District. U.A.O.D.—Grand Lodge of the North Island ; Grand Lodge of Canterbury. 17. Summarised results of the valuations are given in two tables (Appendix V.). Table A shows— 1. Number of members at the date of valuation ; 2. Present value of benefits ; 3. Present value of contributions to benefit funds ; 4. Value of accumulated benefit funds ; 5. Surplus or deficiency ; 6. Average surplus or deficiency per member; 7. Average age of members ; 8. Average annual contribution per member to benefit funds 9. Average value per member of accumulated benefit funds ; 10. Rate of interest per annum credited to benefit funds (average for quinquennium); 11. Surplus or deficiency at previous valuation (average per member). Table B shows— Ratio to liabilities of—(a) Present value of contributions to benefit funds ; (b) value of accumulated benefit funds; (c) total assets ; (d) surplus or deficiency. 18. Societies on application to the Registrar, may have their valuations made free of cost Ine experience of the societies valued in the office during the year represents 25,342-5 years of life at risk. Tins experience has been grouped with that published in tabular form in last year's report, and the combined results are exhibited hereunder. The sickness of these societies for the quinquennium preceding the valuation date was nearly 5 per cent, in excess of the expectation a fact which justifies the use of a table of present values based on New Zealand experience
