RAILWAY CHARGES: CONCESSIONS MADE, AND REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the sth July, 1898. Ordered, " That a return be laid before this House showing— (a) The articles upon which concessions have been made to the publio using the railways since 1890, and the revenue conceded upon the same ; (6) the articles upon which concessions have been made in the postal and telegraph service (including telephones), and the revenue conceded upon the same ; (c) the total revenue and expenditure of the railway and postal services in 1890, and the same in 1898 ; (d) the percentage of revenue to expenditure for both periods separately."—(Hon. Fbee school tickets issued to children up to sixteen years of age attending private schools for primary education. Return tickets at reduced rates granted to delegates to annual and biennial meetings of religious bodies and friendly societies. Tickets at reduced rates granted to members of rowing-clubs travelling together in parties. Season-ticket rates for three miles reduced. Fares between Auckland, Kingsland, Morningside, Mount Albert, Westfield, and Papatoitoi reduced. Fares between Newmarket and Mount Eden, Kingsland, Morningside, Mount Albert, Avondale, Remuera, Green Lane, Te Papapa, Onehunga, Otahuhu, and Papatoitoi reduced. Fares between Mount Eden and Kingsland, Morningside, Mount Albert, and Avondale reduced. Reduced fares between Clyde Station and Bluff and Ocean Beach granted. Distance between Ashburton and Tinwald to be counted as two instead of three miles. Excursion tickets from Remuera, Ellerslie, Penrose, and Otahuhu to Rotorua and Okoroire, and from Onehunga to Okoroire, arranged. Travellers' annual all-lines tickets : Provision made for transfer from holder to bond fide employe of same firm on payment of a fee of 10s. for each transfer. Ticket issued at reduced rate for North Island; transferable and non-transferable tickets issued ; also tickets for one or both Islands. No previous provision. Season tickets : Regulation fixing conditions and charge for transfer of a ticket or the replacing a lost season ticket inserted. No previous provision. Navy recruits : Cheap fares arranged for boys proceeding to ports to be examined on or to join any of Her Majesty's war-ships. Tickets of students of agricultural and technical colleges made available for return for one week from date of issue. School-boarders : Age-limit and notice clause removed; tickets granted without special notice, and irrespective of age of boarder. Apprentices' arid pupil-teachers' age-limit for tickets at half-rate raised to twenty-one years. Teachers' Saturday season tickets : Regulation amended to permit of tickets being used by teachers proceeding to examinations. Technical school and commutation tickets issued at reduced rates. Tourist excursion tickets North, South, and both Islands obtainable by any person at reduced rates. Technical schools commutation tickets: Age-limit removed; tickets issued to any person attending a technical school registered with the Minister of Education. Judges of show exhibits granted tickets at 2d. per mile when proceeding to shows for the purpose of judging exhibits. School season and technical school season tickets made available for distances not exceeding sixty miles. Defence Forces conveyed at reduced rates. Reduced fares (2d. per mile) granted to delegates attending meetings of religious bodies. Stage system on the Whangarei Section abolished ; ordinary fares and regulations substituted.
