EDUCATION: SCHOOL-BUILDING VOTES. DETAILS OF ALLOCATIONS OF VOTE OF £25,000 AND FOR SCHOOLS IN NEWLY SETTLED DISTRICTS.
Returns to Orders of the House of Representatives dated the 18th and 19th October, 1898. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the allocation between the several Education Boards of the colony of the sum of £25,000 specially voted last session for school-building purposes ; such return to set forth the amount paid to each Board, the amount applied for, and the purposes in detail to which the Boards proposed that the money should be applied."—(Mr. Carson.) Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the details of the amounts allocated for expenditure for schools in newly settled districts out of the vote for last year."—(Mr. Pibani.)*
The vote apparently referred to was a vote of £13,000. No part of this money was allocated to Education Boards. But grants to Education Boards in aid of school-buildings in newly settled districts have been made and charged to this year's votes as follows: Auckland, £1,932; Taranaki, £520; Wanganui, £2,716; Wellington, £4,250; Hawke's Bay, £513; Nelson, £298; Grey, £120; Westland, £300; North Canterbury, £927; South Canterbury, £421; Otago, £1,555; Southland, £1,630: total, £15,482.* The proposals made in detail by the Boards are as follows: — Auckland.— Opuriao North, £167 ; Te Puke -No. 2, £163 ; Kimihia, £197 ; Tangaihi, £133 ; Opuriao South, £196; Kiripaka, £150; Manawaru, £200; Otara (Opotiki), £150; Ohaeawai, £155 ; Oruaiti, £139; Paemako, £160; Tairua Block, £130 ; Tatarariki, £110; Ohiwa, £160; Mangakura, £157 ; Te Puna Point, £100; Bridgewater, £125 : total, £2,598.
