1895. NEW ZEALAND

EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND. [In continuation of E.-5, 1894.]

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency

The Chancellor of the Univeesity to His Excellency the Govbenoe. My Loed, — University of New Zealand, Wellington, 17th May, 1895. I have the honour to transmit herewith to your Excellency the annual report of the Senate of the University, as adopted at the meeting of that body on the 29th April, 1895, in accordance with the provisions of clause 28 of " The New Zealand University Act, 1874." The report is accompanied by a statement of the accounts of the University for the year 1894, audited in accordance with the law I have, &c, James Hectoe, Chancellor His Excellency the Earl of Glasgow, Governor of New Zealand.

Annual Eepoet of the Senate. In compliance with the 28th clause of the University Act, the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings of the University since the date of the last report:— The Senate met at Christchurch, pursuant to the provisions of the University Act, in annual session, on the 27th February, 1895. At that session the Senate made certain amendments to the statutes formerly in force, and these amendments, being embodied in new statutes, have been approved by His Excellency The Court of Convocation met for its annual session at Dunedin on the 9th January, 1895. The University held during the year 1894 the usual examinations of November and December in the Faculties or Arts, Science, Medicine, Law, and Music, and for admission to the legal profession. The total number of candidates who presented themselves for all these examinations was 976. The Senate also held special sessions in December, 1894, and in April, 1895. At its annual and special sessions the Senate conferred the following degrees after examination The degree of Bachelor of Arts on 42 candidates, the degree of Bachelor of Science on 4 candidates , the degree of Bachelor of Laws on 4 candidates ; the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery on 2 candidates, the degree of Master of Arts on 12 candidates, the degree of Doctor of Laws on 1 candidate. The number of graduates of the University admitted after examination is now as follows Bachelors of Arts (alone , 246 , Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science, 5 , Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 10 Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, 3, Bachelors of Science (alone), 5 , Bachelors of Laws (alone), 8 , Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (alone), 17 , Masters of Arts (alone), 135 , Masters of Arts and Bachelors of- Science, 14 Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Laws, 9, Master of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, 1, Master of Arts and Doctor of Science, 1, Masters of Arts and Doctors of Laws, 2, Doctor of Laws (alone), 1, Doctor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts, 1, Doctors of Medicine (alone), 4 total, 462. The Senate has this year made complete provision for the details of a curriculum in Agriculture, and students who successfully complete a course in Mechanical, Civil, or Mining Engineering, or in Agriculture, may now be admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Science in any of these professional branches. It may therefore be now said that university instruction and graduation in the highest departments of technical education are brought within the reach of any colonist in New Zealand who desires to avail himself of them. Further, the Senate has endeavoured to meet, as far as seems consistent with the maintenance of a proper standard of university work, the needs of those who, from the circumstances of the colony, are debarred from the privilege of regular attendance at a college. With this view, provision has been made whereby such persons may obtain university certificates of proficiency in any subject which they desire to take up for examination, without attendance at college lectures. 29th April, 1895. Jambs Hector, Chancellor
