Qn May 21st, 1893, the anniversary of the opening of the College, three gentlemen ceased to be members of the Council by reason of effluxion of time —viz. the Hon. Colonel Haultain, appointed by His Excellency the Governor in Council, the Eight Eeverend William Garden Cowie, D.D., elected by the constituent members of the General Assembly of New Zealand, and Sir George Maurice O'Eorke, 8.A., elected by the graduates of the University of New Zealand on the books of the College. To supply these vacancies, Mr. Gerald Loftus Peacocke, barrister-at-law, of the Middle Temple, was appointed by the Governor in Council, and Bishop Cowie and Sir Maurice O'Eorke were severally re-elected without opposition. 2. A casual vacancy in the Council was caused in the early part of the year 1893 by the resignation of the Eev William Morley, Principal of Wesley College, Three Kings, in consequence of his removal to another part of the colony The Governor in Council appointed, in his place the Eev William, James Williams, who had succeeded Mr Morley as Principal of Wesley College. 3. The ex officio members of the Council are at present Mr James Job Holland, the Mayor of the City of Auckland, and Mr Eichard Udy, the Chairman of the Auckland Board of Education. 4. The Council considered it desirable that, for the supply of these vacancies, three Professors should be appointed—viz. first, of Classics, secondly, of the English Language and Literature , and, thirdly, of Mathematics. For the selection of Professors for these chairs the Government of New Zealand, as on all previous occasions, conferred the important favour of allowing the services of the Agent-General; and the Agent-General, Sir Westby Perceval, K.C.M.G., having obtained the co-operation of two gentlemen who occupy educational positions of importance in London—viz., Professor E. K. Douglas and Mr, A. H. Gilkes —has succeeded in making selections, out of large numbers of candidates, the results of which promise to be of the most satisfactory character The gentlemen selected are not only highly distinguished in academical status, but are also known to be specially qualified as lecturers and teachers. The Council feels itself deeply indebted to Sir Westby Perceval for these services, and is under similar obligation to Mr Walter Kennaway, C.M.G., Secretary to the Agent-General, who indefatigably tendered most valuable assistance as honorary secretary of the commission of selection. The Council has also conveyed, through the Agent-General, to the two gentlemen who co-operated with him in making the selections, its thankful recognition of the important services thus rendered. 6.
