Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 25th September, 1894. Ordered, "That a return, if obtainable, be laid before this House giving a comparative statement of the charges on our railways for the carriage of fruit and agricultural and dairy products for long distances—say, from ten to a hundred miles —with the charges for the same class of goods on the Australian railways."—(Mr. W. Rates per Ton for Cheese and Butter on the New Zealand Government Railways and on the Australian Railways.

* The maximum rate for cheese in 4-ton lots, consigned from south of Dunedin to Bluff, Invercargill, Dunedin, or Port Chalmers, is £1 3s. per ton. For cheese in 4-ton lots consigned from north of Oamaru to Oamaru, Timaru •Chrisfcchurch, or Lyttelton, the maximum rate is £1 3s. per ton. t At these rates the minimum charge for distances under fifty-six miles is £1, and forjdistances over fifty-six, miles the minimum quantity is 2 tons; otherwise it is charged as per column B.
