No. 67.—Petition of Niu Hare. Petitioners complain that Mr. John Lundon is unjustly endeavouring to cause the dismissal of the master of the Motukaraka Native School, and pray that no attention may be paid to his requests. I have the honour to report that, as this matter has already been settled by Government, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 14th July, 1892. —

No. 54.—Petition of John W. Matthews. Petitionee prays that redress may be afforded him for losses sustained through the state of the law relating to the purchase of Native lands. I have the honour to report that the Committee is of opinion the attention-of Government should be called to the report on a similar petition from John W. Matthews dated 28th July, 1891 (No. 67 of 1891, Sess. IL). 14th July, 1892.

No. 678, 1891, Sess. IL—Petition of Tomopo te Eangi and 12 Others. Petitionees allege that, through the interference of a half-caste woman, they are unable to obtain possession of Sections 39 and 40, Koheroa, being a portion of land returned by Government to the late Hone Whatarangi. They pray that a survey be made, and the land finally conveyed to them. I have the honour to report that, as this matter has already been settled by Government, the Committee has no recommendation to make.

No. 686, 1891, Sess. II. —Petition of Hamioba Wunu te Hunga and Others. Petitionees pray that a rehearing may be granted in connection with the Euatangata Block. As this matter cannot be dealt with except by special legislation, the Committee would recommend that the petition be referred to Government, with the suggestion that some measures be brought in to deal generally with Native trusts. 26th July, 1892.

No. 113.—Petition of Tama Nohowaka te Whakanoho and Others. Petitionees pray that the Crown grants for certain lands in the parish of Eangitaiki may be cancelled, and new grants issued, including each individual of their tribe. I have the honour to report that, as this is a matter which calls for special legislation, the Committee is of opinion the petition should be referred to the Government wdth a view to having the necessary measures brought in. 28th July, 1892.

No. 166.-Petition of E. F. Tizaed. Petitionee complains that, owing to the operation of the Native-land laws, he has been debarred from getting possession of certain lands purchased by him from the Natives. He prays for relief. I am directed to report that, as this petition refers to a matter which requires special legislation, the Committee is of opinion the same should be referred to the Government, with that end in view. 29th July, 1892.

No. 194.—Petition of Kararaina Peea and 5 Others. Petitionees allege that when the subdivision of the Oturoa Block was made the wrong portions were conveyed to the different claimants. They now pray for investigation in order that the matter may be adjusted. I am directed to report that this petition should be referred to the Government, and that the Committee is of opinion the matter would be satisfactorily set at rest by the adoption of Judge Mackay's recommendation contained in the file of papers connected with the case now in the possession of the Native Land Court —namely, " That the matter be referred to the Chief Judge, with a view to devise some means of affording the relief prayed for, either by authorising an informal inquiry, or in any other manner that may be deemed advisable and appropriate to meet the requirements of the case." 16th August, 1892.

No. 405.—Petition of Joseph Feancis Studholme. Petitionee alleges that, in consequence of the improper action of a Chief Judge of the Native Land Court in privately dismissing certain applications for rehearing, the title to a large area of land purchased by Messrs. Studholme Brothers in the Mangaohane Block has been rendered valueless. He prays that legislation may be enacted to enable the determination of the rights of those Natives whose applications were wrongfully dismissed, and also for the purpose of validating the title now held by himself and brothers.

I have the honour to report that the Committee have fully considered the allegations contained in the petition, and the evidence adduced; that they have examined the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, and the Court documents in relation to the case, and also have heard counsel for all concerned; with the result that they find the statements of the petitioner to be correct. They therefore recommend that provision be made whereby the petitioners' case shall be unaffected by the partial rehearing ordered by the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court in the Mangaohane Block, except so far as Native rights may be judged to exist on the said rehearing. The Committee is also of opinion that such rehearing should be limited to those who made the applications upon which it was granted. sth October, 1892.
