Registrar-General's Office, Wellington, 9th Juno, 1886. rXIHE following table shows the Population of the Electoral Districts of the Colony of New Zealand, according to the I Census of the 28th March last. The numbers given are taken from returns supplied by the different Enumerators, and are subject to revision, but they may be accepted as a close approximation to the exact numbers now being made up in this office. As the particulars for the population on shipboard and Chatham Islands have not yet been supplied, the full number of persons for the colony cannot yet be given ; but it is evident so far that the population according to the Census returns will be about 8,000 less than the number previously estimated. The estimates are based on actual returns of births and deaths, immigration and emigration. The deficiency is probably owing to two causes: (1) a somewhat imperfect enumeration by the Sub-Enumerators in difficult parts of the country ; and (2) the number that during the past five years have left the colony without having prepaid their passages. Notwithstanding every effort made by the Customs officers to obtain correct returns, it seems evident that a considerable number must leave annually, of whoso departure no official record is kept.
