The Chancellor to His Excellency the Govebnoe. University of Otago, 7th May, 1884. In compliance with "The Otago University Ordinance, 1869," I have the honour to forward to your Excellency the following report of the proceedings of the University for the year ended the 31st March, 1884 :— The session which commenced on the Ist May was attended by 103 students, of whom 33 have matriculated. McNab, and W A. Stout, passed the final examination for the B.A. degree, and B. M. Beattie, J J Hay, D. Munro, John Murray, S. Percy Seymour, and W A. Sim passed the first section of that degree. M.A. Degeee.—Alex. Purdie, first class in natural science, D. White, second class in political science; and D. W M. Burn, third class in Latin and English. LL.B. Degeee.—A. B. Barclay Medical School.-—ln the course of the year the Council appointed the following Lecturers— viz., Daniel Colquhoun, M.D., Lond., M.E.C.P., Lond., M.E.C.S., Eng., Practice of Medicine. Edward D. M. Mackellar, M.D., CM., Glasgow, Pathology Ferdinand C. Batchelor, M.E.C.S., Eng., L.E.C.P., L.M., L.S.A., Edin., Midwifery John Macdonald, L.B.C.P and S., Edin., L.8.C.M.5., L.S.A., Eng., Materia Medica. The appointment of the Lecturer on Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health will complete the staff of the Medical School. Buildings.—The additions made to the University buildings, at a cost of about £6,000, of which £4,850 came from loan and the balance from revenue, give ample and suitable accommodation for the Faculty of Medicine, the Chemistry Classes, and the School of Mines. Appaeatus.—ln consequence of the large additions made to our scientific apparatus during the past year, the University is now able to give instruction in all the branches of Experimental Physics. Benmoee Bun.—The Council reports that the lease of Benmore, which expired on the Ist May of this year, was offered for sale under the provisions of the Act of 1877, and realized the satisfactory annual rental of £3,600. Foeest Hill.—The Council, under the authority of the Governor in Council, offered for sale the Forest Hill Beserve in suitable sections, but regrets to report that only 2,156 acres were sold, the average price being 225. sd. an acre. The proportion of the price paid has been invested on mortgage of freehold security.

Popular Lectures.—The course of popular lectures on Physics was largely attended by the' teachers of the public schools. The extra chemical class also secured a good attendance. Museum.—The management of the Museum continues to be satisfactory, and through the zeal of the Curator many valuable specimens have been placed in its cabinets. Accounts.—The abstract of accounts, showing the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending 31st March, 1884, is appended to this report.
