RETURN OF POPULATION BY CENSUS 1878 AND 1881 (DISTINGUISHING SEXES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BOROUGHS).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 15th June, 1881. " That there be laid on the table of the House—(l.) A return, distinguishing soxes, of the number of the population Ja the colony at the date of the census of 1878 and of the census of 1881; also showing the excess of births over de_,_f_s during the interval between those dates; and further showing the number of immigrants brought into the colony during the same time, partly and wholly at the public cost. (2.) A return of population (distinguishing sexes) residing at fcha dates aforesaid within and outside corporate boroughs."— (Hon. Mr. G-isbome.)

Note.—As the total excess of immigration over emigration during the period amounted to 34,587 persons, the excess of unassisted immigration may be taken at 17,344. Wm. E. E. Brown, Begistrar-G^eneral.
