When the Government wanted to charter a steamer to take the Governor from Wellington to Lyttelton the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company asked £700, and I could name many other similar cases. The " Hinemoa " steamed 15,235 miles, was under steam 1,680 hours, and used 964 tons of coal, which is 11 cwt. 27 lbs. of coal per hour. The " Hinemoa " has used 100 tons of Bay of Islands coal, which was only equal to about 70 tons of Newcastle coal. In twelve months the " Luna " cost £8,200, steamed 18,000 miles, and used 1,800 tons of coal. S.S. " Hinemoa," Wellington, 30th June, 1877. John Faiechild. Exteact from the Log of the s.s.
