ENDOWMENT FOR FREE BATHS, WASH-HOUSES, ETC. (PETITION FOR RETURN OF GRANT.)

To the Most Honorable the Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled. The Petition of the Matob, Council, and Citizens oe the City op Auckland, humbly showeth, — That on the 18th day of October, 1850, His Excellency Sir George Grey, Governor, did reserve and set aside an allotment of land No. 8, of Section 95, of the Suburbs of Auckland, in the Parish of Waitemata, County of Eden, unto Andrew Sinclair, William Swainson, and Alexander Shepherd, Esquires, in trust as an endowment for the purposes of establishing Eree Baths, Wash-houses, &c, for the benefit of the citizens of Auckland, and that on the 14th day of June, 1854, the aforesaid endowments were conveyed by the Acting Governor, Robert Henry Wynyard, Esquire, and the aforesaid trustees unto the Council and Burgesses of the said city. That the Council became defunct from want of means, and that in no Act that your Petitioners are aware of is it set forth that it is desirable or that such Crown grant aforesaid was specially set aside. Tour Petitioners now being in a position, by the means of a supply of water at a very large outlay and cost to the ratepayers, to enable them carry out the objects of the aforesaid trust, by the estabment of Free Public Baths and Wash-houses, respectfully pray your honorable House will be pleased to cause the prayer of this petition to be heard, considered, and the aforesaid grant returned to the citizens.
