1876. NEW ZEALAND.

LUNATIC ASYLUMS IN NEW ZEALAND, (FURTHER REPORT ON). (In Continuation of Papers presented on the 23rd June, 1876.)

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency. No. 1. Mr. W. M. Crompton to the Supebintendent, New Plymouth. Sir,— New Plymouth, Ist July, 1876. I have the honor to state, for the information of the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, that I have occasionally visited the Lunatic Asylum during the last half-year. Dennis Clifford is so far restored that he requires no further surveillance, and left the province, without my being aware of it, to settle with a friend in Wellington. William Jordan still conducts himself well with his friends. Stephen Coad was brought back to the Asylum on the 25th March last, and, after medical treatment, returned to his family in the country on the 14th April. Daniel Earren, after having been discharged from the Asylum in Wellington, has been recommitted to the Asylum here. I have no hope now of his recovery; he is evidently worse in mental health. Willielm Wittog, a German, was admitted 30th May, —an incurable case, being very excitable, and full of all manner of hallucinations. Mary Brewer was taken to the Asylum at Wellington on the 21st March last. Every attention is paid to the health, comfort, and cleanliness of the patients. I have, &c, Wm. M. Crompton, His Honor the Superintendent, New Plymouth. Inspector in Lunacy.

By Authority: George Didsbuey, Government Printer, Wellington.—lB76.
