1875. NEW ZEALAND.

NATIVE SCHOOLS, (FURTHER REPORT RELATING TO).

Presented to both Houses of ihe General Assembly by Command of Sis Excellency.

No. 1. Native Office (Native Schools Branch), Sib— Wellington, 13th August, 1875. I have the honor to submit, for your information, returns showing the attendance of Native children at the several schools throughout the colony, together with the expenditure thereon, during the past financial year. The number of Native children entered on the various school registers as receiving education on the 30th June last, was 1,010 boys, 531 girls. The full average attendance of children at the schools during the year being 707 boys and 423 girls. There are three classes of schools at which these children attend:— Ist. Village day-schools established under the Native Schools Act. At these schools the full attendance of children during the year has been 592 boys and 351 girls, at a cost of, including salaries of masters and mistresses, books, &c, school furniture, and all incidental expenses other than the erection of school buildings, £5,457 4s. 7d., being at the rate of £5 15s. 9d. per annum for each pupil. 2nd. Private day-schools and schools established under Provincial Acts. The attendance at these schools of Maori children has greatly increased during the past year, the full average being 56 boys and 37 girls, at an expense of £395 7s. 5d., equal to £4 ss. per child per annum. 3rd. Public institutions and private boarding-schools, at which children are boarded, clothed, and educated. The full average attendance at these schools during the year has been 59 boys and 35 girls, at a cost of £1,891 6s. 10d., being at the rate of £20 2s. sd. per annum for each pupil. The total amount expended on Maori education, under the supervision of the Native Department, during the past year has been — Erom Public Moneys, — £ s. d.
