PETITIONS RELATIVE TO THROWING OPEN LANDS IN OTAGO FOR SETTLEMENT.

No. 1. His Honor J. Macandretv to the Hon. W. Gisboene. Province of Otago, New Zealand, Sir, — Superintendent's Office, Dunedin, 10th August, 1871. I have the honor to forward the enclosed letter I have received from the Speaker of the Provincial Council, transmitting twenty-nine petitions having reference to the throwing open of land for the purpose of settlement, with a view to their being laid upon the table of the General Assembly at the- approaching session. I have the honor to forward herewith twenty-nine petitions (Nos. and Sess. indicated below) " having reference to the throwing open of land for the purpose of settlement," with a view to their being laid before the General Assembly, in accordance with the enclosed copy of a Resolution passed by the Provincial Council on the 7th ultimo. Nos. 3, 4, 14, 16, 20, 22, 34, 37, and 40, Sess. 25, 1869. No. 29, Sess. 27, 1870. Nos. 14, 15, 10, 17, 18, 25, 2G, 31, 32, 56, and 62, Sess. 29,1871. Resolution passed the Provincial Council, 7th July, 1871. Resolves, That Mr. Speaker be requested to forward, through His Honor the Superintendent, for the purpose of laying upon the table of the General Assembly, all petitions that have been presented to the Provincial Council since 1866, having reference to the throwing open of land for the purpose of settlement. Schedule of Petitions. No. 1.—72 Residents in the West Taieri Hundreds, praying for extension of the West Taieri Hundreds, or the proclamation of a new hundred contiguous thereto. No. 2.—GS Freeholders, Settlers, and others in the West Taieri District, praying for the proclamation of a new hundred. No. B. — David H. Mervyn, Esq., on behalf of the inhabitants of the Mount Benger District, prayjngthat the lands in that district may be opened up for settlement. No. 4.—44 Settlers in the Waikouaiti Hundred, praying that parts of runs 20 and 27 may be added tothat hundred No. S.—ISG Miners, Farmers, and Residents of Blacks (including Dry Bread, Tinkers, German Hill, &c.,) Gold Field, praying that an agricultural settlement may be defined. No. G. —72 Settlers in the East and West Clutha Hundreds, praying that part of the laud near those hundreds may be set aside as a commonage for running stock. No. 7. —147 Miners and other Settlers resident in Switzers, praying that certain land in the neighbourhood of Switzers be thrown open for agricultural purposes. No. 8.—4G8 Residents in the districts of Tokomairiro, Clutha, and Waitahuna, praying that runs 35, 36, and 94 in those districts may be proclaimed into hundreds. No. 9. —91 Settlers and others in the district of Clutha, praying that new hundreds may be proclaimed southwards of East and West Clutha Hundreds. No. 10. —117 Settlers and Residents in the district of Hawksbury, praying for the extension of the Hawksbury Hundred, so as to include from 30,000 to 40,000 acres of new land. No. 11.—114 Miners, Farmers, and Residents of the district of Blacks, praying that an area of at least 10,000 acres may be proclaimed as a gold fields commonage for that district.

No. 12.—82 Settlers in the district of Shag Valley, praying that a large area of land fit for agricultural purposes may be opened up for sale. No. 13.—19 Inhabitants in the district of Popotunoa, praying that a portion of land in that district may be constituted a new hundred. No. 14. —59 Settlers and others in the Strath Taieri, praying that that district may be constituted hundreds. No. 15.—10 Inhabitants in the district of Mount Benger, praying that land for settlement may be opened up in that district. No. 16. —226 Residents in the district of Tuapeka, praying that certain runs may be thrown open for settlement. No. 17.—91 Farmers and others in the district of "Wakatip, praying that more land should not be thrown open for settlement at present, without careful consideration. No. 18.—99 Residents in the district of Clutha, praying that the Otago Hundreds Acts may be repealed. No. 19. —113 Residents in the districts of Naseby and St. Bathan's, praying that the Otago Hundreds Acts may be repealed. No. 20.—43 Miners and Settlers in the district of Serpentine, praying that the Otago Hundreds Acts may be repealed. No. 21.—67 Miners and Settlers in the districts of Hyde and Kyeburn, praying that the Otago Hundreds Acts may be repealed. No. 22.—29 Residents in the district of Waikouaiti, praying that the Otago Hundreds Acts may bo repealed. No. 23.—96 Residents in the district of Waitahuna, praying that measures may be adopted for obtaining land on a system of deferred payments. No. 24.—41 Cattle Owners in the district of Macraes, praying that certain land may be proclaimed a commonage. No. 25.—300 Residents in the district of Mount Benger, praying that certain pastoral leases may be cancelled. No. 26.—68 Residents in the district of "Waihola, praying that the Otago Hundreds Acts may be repealed. No. 27.-29 Residents in Miller's Flat East, praying that Miller's Flat Block may be thrown open under the agricultural leasing system. No. 28.—4 Residents in the district of Cromwell, praying that certain blocks of land may be constituted a commonage.
