PAINFUL INJURY

THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday While journeying between Niue Island and Rarotonga during his recent tour of the Pacific Islands, the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, suffered a painful injury. The ship in which he was a passenger was struck by heavy seas and he was thrown from a chair to the deck. Two of his ribs were injured, necessitating X-ray examination and treatment when he reached Rarotonga.

The Governor-General and his party were travelling in the Fiji Government’s vessel H.M.S. Viti, which left Tonga on Monday, August 6, for Niue, experiencing a very rough passage of two nights and a day. A day was spent at Niue, sheltering from the weather, and the ship later put to sea for Rarotonga, but was forced to, return. Later she sailed for Rarotonga and encountered heavy seat, one of which caused the accident.

Although in pain, the GovernorGeneral carried out his official engagements at Rarotonga. It is not yet known whether the ribs are cracked, but he will undergo a further X-ray examination today.
