HOTEL BARS CLOSE

ACTION TAKEN IN AUCKLAND Auckland hotelkeepers yesterday accepted a suggestion by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., chairman of the Auckland Licensing Committee, and virtually stopped the sale of bottled beer for consumption off licensed premises in an effort to assist the authorities to control the rougher element in the community. The closing of hotel bars for three hours from 10.30 a.m. did not greatly help the position and in some hotels the bars were closed at 3 p.m. for lack of supplies. In Hamilton there was little room for complaint in this respect. The crowd was good natured and fairly orderly, and so far as can be learned no wanton damage was done. Hotel bar staffs were taxed to their utmost to meet the demands of customers, a considerable quantity of bottled beer being sold for consumption later in the day or evening.
