POPE’S INTENTIONS
BECOME VOLUNTARY PRISONER i LONDON, Sept. 24 The Pope intends to constitute himi self a voluntary prisoner by re-estab-j lishing the conditions prevailing ; before the Lateran Treaty of 1929. ! Until the. Lateran Treaty no Pope 1 had left the Vatican since 1870, as a protest against the entry of King Victor Emmanuel’s troops into Rome and the conquest of the last of the Papacy’s temporal possessions. ! The Papal State, extinct since 1870, was re-created under the name of the ; State of Vatican City under the terms i signed at Rome on February 11, j 1929, and came into effect o.i May 7 | of that year. I The territory of the Papacy was confined to the palaces of the Vatican and the Lateran and the Villa of Castel Grandolfo, and the temporal power of the Pope was in suspense until the treaty of 1929, which recognised the full and independent sov- : ereignty of the Holy See in the City ! of the Vatican.
