BATTLESHIP SUNK
1400 SEAMEN KILLED (Received Sept. 25, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 24 Italian survivors of the battleship Roma state that 1400 members of the crew were killed and 500 badly burned after German planes scored a direct hit on the funnel. The Madrid correspondent of the American Press quotes survivors as saying that the Roma exploded like a bomb, covered the sea with tons of blazing oil, and immediately began to sink.
A cruiser and five gunboats which the Roma was escorting stopped and picked up survivors.
