WORK FOR OBJECTORS

HOSPITAL ORDERLIES APPEAL BOARD SUGGESTION “It is difficult to understand why these men cannot be replaced by men who have conscientious objection to serving under military control,” said the chairman, Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M.. at today’s sitting in Hamilton of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board when referring to hospital orderlies. Evidence had been given that hospital orderlies needed to be fit men, and that advertisements had failed to attract suitable men. Mr Paterson said the board was of opinion that several of the conscientious objectors could have their bona fides tested, and probably a number of them would be quite competent in hospital orderly work. He added that some time ago a special tribunal was set up to investigate such problems, but it would appear that the tribunal had not been operating in the Hamilton district. Why that was so he did not know. The board adjourned the appeals on behalf of two orderlies for a month.
