LACK OF NEWSPRINT

NECESSITY OF ECONOMY Further reduction in the available supply of newsprint owing to war conditions has resulted in an announcement by the newspaper proprietors of New Zealand that another decrease in the average size of newspapers as from April 1 is inevitable. The Waikato Times has therefore regretfully to request advertisers, correspondents and all who make contributions to the paper to exercise economy in space wherever possible. It is the desire of the Times to give the best possible service to readers and advertisers, but the exigency of war has placed a strict physical limitation upon the amount of paper that can be used. SAVING WASTE PAPER PRIZES OFFERED IN BRITAIN To aid the collection of waste paper, £20,000 is being given for prizes in Britain. The country has been divided into 20 areas, in each of which £IOOO will be awarded to the highest collections per head of the population in the ratio of £SOO for the first prize, £250 for the second, £IOO for the third and three consolation awards of £SO each. Winning localities will give half their prizes to national and half to local charities. Children are playing a big part. They are turning their schools into waste-paper depots, helping the voluntary workers in their collections and persuading parents to give them every scrap of waste paper in the house.
