STAG COMPETITION

WIN FOR TECHNICAL LAST YEAR’S WINNERS BEATEN The star attraction was the meeting of last year’s winners, Frankton, with Technical Old Boys, on No. 1 ground, Rugby Park, and in a game that became intensely interesting, Technical overcame its slackness in the early stages to win decisively, scores coming fast in the closing stages. The teams were:— Technical Old Boys.—Bary, Goosman, Whyte, Nisbet, Wilson, S. Houghton, E. Houghton, Lye, H. Morgan, L. Morgan, Kemp, Warren, Brown, McHugh, Kneebone. Frankton. —Petch, Griffiths, Wigzell, Davies, Everest, Cassells, Bushell, Jackson, Elliott, Shattock, Belcher, Satherly, Dick, Bootten, Lines. Frankton promptly attacked, but Goosman relieved with a dash up the line to transfer to Whyte, unmarked, but it was a forward pass. Technical forwards attacked solidly, and had Frankton in trouble, but the defence held. Griffiths put Frankton within scoring distance with a speedy dash, and the ball came back to Petch, who landed a fine field goal, to be the first scorer in a Stag Trophy match this season.—Frankton 4, Technical 0.

Solid Rucking Solid rucking was in favour of Technical until a penalty kick gave Frankton relief. Play was mostly in neutral ground in the next ten minutes. Then Whyte received a pass and he streakau upfield from halfway, to send Nisbet over for ? nice try, wide out. The kick failed. —Technical 3, Frankton 4. Two minutes later, Petch narrowly missed with a shot at goal from the field. Technical attacked again and Whyte was brilliant in a dash up field, but his pass to Goosman was forward when a try seemed certain. Frankton next got a penalty in a handy position, but the kick was a poor one. After a hot attack by the Frankton pack, Nisbet cut through but failed to dummy Petch, and the whistle sounded for halftime. On resuming, Frankton attacked solidly and a penalty right in front enabled Satherly to add three points.—Frankton 7, Technical 3. Within minute, Whyte scored a try for Technical, dashing through the opposition to score in a good position. The kick failed.—Technical 6, Frankton 7. The game, which had hitherto been chiefly confined to the forwards, opened up and the ball was tossed and kicked among the backs. Satherly kicked another penalty goal, when Warren infringed rignt in front of the posts.—Frankton 10, Technical 6. Whyte’s Good Try The game was fast, with Frankton pack standing the pressure best. Satherly failed with a penalty kick, then Technical backs were set in motion, with the three-quarter line going fast, and Whyte scored a good try. The kick was unsuccessful.— Technical 9, Frankton 10. Technical pressed hard, but the defence held and play came back to midfield. Watson gathered the ball from some loose play and sent Goosman over for a try fairly wide out. H. Morgan’s attempt to goal just missed the upright.—Technical 12, Frankton 10. Frankton rushed play to Technical’s line, and a desperate rally nearly succeeded. Goosman cleared, but Frankton surged to the line again and in a melee Lines got a try, which put Frankton in the lead again. The kick failed.—Frankton 13, Technical 12. Technical backs handled well, and Whyte raced 50 yards to send Goosman over for another try wide out. The kick was disallowed.—Technical 15, Frankton 13. Within two minutes Goosman received and he sent the ball on to S. Houghton, and on to Wilson, who scored. The kick failed.—Technical 18, Frankton 13.

Another try came almost at once, when H. Morgan kicked through and had enough pace to follow through and score a try. Again the kick failed, the ball dropping under the crossbar. The final score was— Technical 21 Frankton 13 Mr D. S. B. Heather was the referee.
